High Quality Mens' Shoes in Ottawa by Patti234in ottawa

[–]zq49 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to be a shoe snob here, since the OP asked for high quality shoes.

Lettelier's main line of dress shoes seems to Clarks. Clarks are made in China, India, Brazil and Vietnam. You can still get quality goodyear-welted US-made and UK-made shoes, so why bother with Chinese products when your goal is quality?

I don't know much about Wolf & Zed, but they are pushing Kenneth Cole shoes on their FB page. Not a good sign - again, Chinese shoes.

Just sayin'.

Also: Brooks Brothers has nice shoes and quick shipping. They use a variety of different manufacturers (US and UK), but I've been pleased with their quality.

If you know your shoe size, you are probably best off ordering online from Allen Edmonds. Excellent US-made shoes.

If you're feeling rich and want to splurge on UK shoes, I've had good luck with this guy.

The selection of quality shoes in Ottawa stores is fairly horrible.

so how much longer until HDD prices have come back to pre-Thailand flood levels? by hardwarequestionsin hardware

[–]zq49 2 points3 points ago

I've been aggressively moving my business use over to SSD as HDDs fail.

That's not aggressive. Aggressive is ripping HDDs out of every frigging desktop right now, because they suck compared to SSDs. That's what we've done. Luckily, that's easy to do in a Linux shop. Dunno about Windows.

We even spent the dough to get 4 Intel 600GB SSDs, for a "bulk storage" filesystem.

The only place left using HDDs is video camera servers and music backups.

Funny how shot recommendations run all the way from #4 to #7.5 for rabbit... seems you can pretty much use anything.

Do you eat groundhog? They colonize under my outbuildings; it would be nice if they were also a tasty treat...

I wouldn't eat the groundhog. They are more of a pest animal than a true game animal.

This just isn't true. People do hunt and eat them.

How are they different than hunting rabbit? As the link says, "Like rabbits and squirrels (both of which are valued food animals), whistle-pigs are vegetarians. Thus, their meat, when properly prepared, is quite tasty and tender."

STEW! There are lots of advantages of starting with a stew:

  • Stewing it all afternoon makes the meat very tender.
  • You can throw the meat in, in chunks, on the bone. After an hour, flake it off the bone with a fork. Very easy. Remove and save the bone for stock-making.
  • Makes the meat go far. You can add lots of vegetables.

My favorite is Chilindron. Super-tasty with rabbit.

There are usually local hunting clubs in rural areas, like this: Madawaska Valley Fish and Game Club. If you don't know any hunters, call one of these clubs and see if someone on the executive knows a group looking for new members.

I know the out-of-province fees are discouraging you, but I'm sure you can find something similar in Quebec.

All good advice, but start with a rabbit. The legal rabbit season is 10 1/2 months long, IIRC, so you can start just about any time. You can use a 22 or a shotgun, rather than a precision high-power rifle with a fancy scope.

In fact, you should first buy a fresh or frozen whole rabbit at Nicastro's. Learn how to take it apart and make a tasty stew. Otherwise... there's no point hunting. (Also, rabbit makes for an excellent stew! So tender!)

Also: exercise. Walk a lot. Do push-ups. Double-barrel shotguns are friggin' heavy. Bush hunting is strenuous work.

Go into a the local hunting stores (like LeBaron on Merivale, or SAIL near the train station) and get a printed copy of the Ontario hunting regulations summary book. It is free.

The rules look complicated at first.

You need an Ontario Outdoors Card. Then, you add licences to the card (for example, small game license, deer license). For some animals, you also need a tag. For example, the deer license lets me shoot deer with antlers, but for antlerless deer, I need to enter a lottery for a tag.

The book is the easiest way to figure it all out. They talk about it at the course, too.

Most licences/tags can be bought online now.
