Over 400 students arrested in Canada during the latest night of mass rallies against tuition fee hikes. Tensions have spiraled after the adoption of a bill that limits students’ rights to freedom of speech, association and assembly by karnovichvaluain worldnews

Education is provincial jurisdiction so the federal government can't do anything. This is between the provincial government, the students and the courts for resolving whether the new law is constitutional.

I have a TF201 and have had zero problems with it.

My experience with ASUS is that they released the Prime, found out the GPS wasn't working properly so they changed the marketing on the Prime to exclude GPS as a feature. They then offered refunds to anyone who asked.

After that, they turned around and created a dongle for the Prime to enable the GPS feature and gave it away for free to anyone who asked (including people like me who purchased the Prime not expecting GPS).

They sent my dongle by FedEx this week at no cost.

I'm pretty impressed with both the Prime and ASUS these days.

I have one of the early serial numbers (though I purchased mine at the beginning of March) and have never had trouble with the wifi...not sure if this particular one was fine to begin with or if things were fixed through an update but I've had no problems.

RCMP "easing" Canadians into cross border policing with Americans by taking "baby steps" by Hermit_Kiddin CanadaPolitics

[–]zoziw 1 point2 points ago

Here is a better article:

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Canadian+officers+could+soon+cross+borders+pursue+suspects/6636124/story.html

It applies to both sides of the border (ie. RCMP can cross into the US), the officers have to be part of a special program and the laws in the country you are in will apply. It isn't exactly an invasion but there are some concerns that need to be addressed.

No one should underestimate the significance of House Speaker John Boehner's declaration yesterday that he will block an increase in the debt limit next winter unless policymakers match each dollar of debt limit increase with at least a dollar in budget cuts, with no revenue increases by ReligiousFreedomDudein Economics

[–]zoziw 3 points4 points ago

I don't think Boehner is that radical, but from a political perspective this is a no brainer.

If he is returned as Speaker after the elections, he knows the radicals in his party are going to force his hand on this, so he might as well give tea-party people some motivation to show up and vote this November by taking a hard stand.

There are a lot of complaints over on the battle.net forums about performance with a 9400m; Blizzard is aware of the problem and working on it.

Hopefully, they will be able to fix this as I would like to buy the game.

At this point, I don't think it would. I've been looking to pick it up but have a 9400m as well and there have been a lot of complaints about performance with it.

The good news is that some posts on the battle.net forums indicate Blizzard is aware of the problem and working on a solution...I'm holding off my purchase for now.

Smashburger anyone? by swordgeekin Calgary

[–]zoziw 16 points17 points ago

We were there a week ago Saturday.

I ordered a Calgary Burger, Smashfries and chocolate shake.

My wife ordered a Calgary Burger, onion rings and an Oreo shake.

My kids both ordered the kids burgers and fries, with one having a vanilla shake and the other having an oreo shake.

The total came to $52.

The Calgary Burger was good, but not "OMG Good"; I'd certainly order another one but they aren't good enough for me to go out of my way to get one.

The Smashfries were nice and different from most fries I have had; I tried a few without ketchup and then decided that putting ketchup on them would probably ruin the uniqueness so ate most of them plain only trying ketchup on the last few...better without ketchup IMHO. Again, good, but I'm not going out of my way to get them.

The onion rings were nice and the sauce made them better; not too greasy. As above, good, but not enough for me to go out of my way to get them.

The kid's burgers and fries were very ordinary.

The milkshakes were absolutely fantastic and I would go out of my way to get one. We all tried each other's shake and all were great.

The restaurant itself felt like a typical fast food restaurant.

They deliver the food to your table when it is ready and give you a number to place on your table so they know where you are. They brought out my meal and the two meals for my kids, but not my wife's meal; I asked the guy when the other burger was coming and he said that was it, I told him that we ordered two Calgary Burgers and he asked to see my receipt and then went and got my wife's order.

They were friendly, but I'm not sure how the order ended up on my receipt but not in their system...it was only their third day of operation though.

The final price gave me some sticker shock, but in fairness the shakes were $5 each adding $20 to the meal; at South St. Burgers the family meal is about $32 including pop, 4 burgers and two large sides, so minus the shakes (but adding two pops for my wife and I) would have brought the price to within $5 of South St.

One nitpick, we ordered the kids meals and asked to substitute shakes for the included soft drinks with us paying the extra, however, they wouldn't do that. We had to buy the kid's shakes separately and still got two kids pops. Most places these days have the ability to add something different to a kids meal with us just paying the difference...that Smashburger can't do this is disappointing.

Our primary "higher end" burger place is South St. Burgers and comparing them I would say:

I prefer the burgers at South St. over those at Smashburger...South St. has a tasty seasoning that I really like and you can choose from a lot of different toppings.

Smashfries and Smashburger onion rings beat the greasier New York Fries and onion rings at South St. South St. has just changed their onion rings and I haven't tried the new ones yet, but I found the old ones really greasy.

I can't compare the shakes because I haven't had one at South St., but the shakes at Smashburger will be tough to beat, they were the highlight of the meal and I would go out of my way to have another one.

TL;DR: I found the burgers, fries and onion rings good, but not great, the shakes were great and I highly recommend them.

Is Canada’s brand strong enough to attract the immigrants it wants? by davidreiss666in canada

[–]zoziw 0 points1 point ago

A few years back the company I working for was seriously considering transferring me to their head office in the US; I'm almost 40 and have lived in Calgary my whole life, so the thought of living the second half of my life somewhere else had some appeal to it.

I wasn't quite sure about the change and did a lot of soul searching during that time. One day, I was at lunch with three immigrants, all from different places in the world, so I asked them why they chose Canada over the US.

The immigrants from the Phillipines and India both responded directly that Canada was easier to get into then the US.

The immigrant from Africa said the racism issue in the US gave her pause, but, ultimately, they came to Canada because it was easier to get into.

In the end, management changed and my being transferred was dropped.

I realize that three people is hardly scientific but it kind of reinforces what this article is saying; the US has a huge branding advantage around the world and we're probably going to have to sell people on Canada.

Don't you need a description of the driver as well? We knew someone who tried to report a traffic infraction and when we called they wanted a description of the driver in addition to what is mentioned here.
