A little different than the usual JP - coyote tries to steal family dog, but NOPE by umt43in JusticePorn

[–]wycks 1 point2 points ago

I think several breeds of dogs have the ability the kill/scare wolves if they are trained to do so especially if they are grouped, it's just silly to think that a domesticated dog can mess with a wild wolf without some experience in the matter.

Your right, much like a black bears, wolves become unpredictable when hungry.

Wolves are much more tactical because they are hunters and that is why an aggressive dog just doesn't have the same skill set. Is is also a misconception that wolves only attack in packs, lone wolfs do hunt and kill very large animals alone.

I know this because I have lived near dogs and wolfs/coyotes and the latter two are very smart hunters and dogs never go near them unless trained.

This is a misconception I have no idea why someone would think this especially with regards to Northern wolves, they are the most dominant canine species on the planet. I have seen arctic wolves, they are truly massive in size, no rotty or pitbull would stand a chance in hell because they are not bred to kill wolves ( wolves btw are not trained to kill, it's their life to kill). Just Google an artic wolf skull and look at those teeth, they are for killing and ripping meat apart, because they swallow without chewing.

Wolf Bite force = ~700 lbs psi
Pitbull Bite force = ~350 lbs psi

This is what a large wolf looks like, http://imgur.com/k5rtz
This thing wakes up every morning hunting using its teeth http://i.imgur.com/rJ2jS.jpg
This is what a wolf skull looks like, notice the teeth and jaw: http://imgur.com/M3XrA

The only domestic breeds that mess with wolves are Anatolian Shepherds, they make rotty's look like carebears, BUT they wear iron/leather collars to protect their necks and use their massive weight to knock the wolves down, and it's never a pretty fight.

Remember wolves kill huge animals for a living and fight among each other for dominance.

ps. Dogs that are not specifically trained to be around wolves run like hell from the smell and the overwhelming feeling you get when someone wants to eat you or simply bite your face off to prove dominance.

My website is currently on the front page of Google under my needed search query. If I redesign my website, will I lose my position on the front page? by chetnrotin web_design

For design and mark-up, no, Google isn't stupid they expect and encourage people to change their websites, or else we would all be stuck in the 90's.

2400ft jump without a parachute by meekpaulin videos

[–]wycks 1 point2 points ago

It's not an 'event' license I forgot the name, maybe it's called an exhibition license? It enables you to have insurance jumping outside drop-zones and in front of crowds for like events and stuff.

I'm not sure if he would have not worn it to be honest, something could have gone wrong above 700 or so feet and it would have saved his life, what is the commit level there, probably 500-600 feet? Maybe it just felt normal, it would be pretty ballsy to do it without.

ya I just searched goole, in the U.S it is : B. USPA PRO Professional Exhibition Rating (im not American so I just assumed it existed).

2400ft jump without a parachute by meekpaulin videos

[–]wycks 1 point2 points ago

No, he wore it because it's a regulation (the FAA in U.S.A, not sure what it is in England).

First you actually need a special license to jump out of things that are not 'regular' dropzones, this is sometimes called an 'event license'. So he got permission to jump there, this probably took years.

Secondly the parachute is mandated in the regulation and not wearing it will result in you loosing your parachute license and being fined, the helicopter pilot can also be fined big bucks and be grounded indefinitely.

Air space in most modern countries is very, very regulated. For example Travis Pastrana stunt , when he jumped sans chute, cost him is parachute license for life, meaning he is no longer able to parachute in America and if he does , he and the operator of the vehicle (plane) is in serious shit (can even be jail time, but mostly fines and loss of operating license).

So even if it was redundant, the regulation stipulated it (like acrobatic planes).

It is more dangerous, on account of the fact he has no parachute and is the first guy to do it.

First Skydive without parachute successful! by notcricketin worldnews

[–]wycks 2 points3 points ago

Is fucking school out or something, fucking reddit kids.

Several people have been planning this for years, in fact there was a race going on to see who could do it (Jeb Corliss, some french dudes, some south african dudes, etc, etc).

No one wanted to sponsor it due to the strong possibly of the wingsuiter dying, so I guess the DIY approach beat them all.

What is the fascination with Sublime Text 2? by ZestyOnein webdev

[–]wycks 17 points18 points ago

Its lightning fast and has a snappy feel.
Its not a resource hog.
Snippets are actually good and easy to make, maybe what your looking for is a plugin.
Easy to customize options.
The minimap is great.

Honestly is nothing crazy special and I get annoyed with it sometimes when using it for more than basic hacking around, it's just a text editor, who cares.

ps. You can rather easily have lots of snippets in one file, all the snippets care about is the sourrounding snippet tags.

CHOM 97.7 [fixed] (x-post from /r/adviceanimals) by whatthefuboomin montreal

[–]wycks 8 points9 points ago

Here is how Canadian and American radio works.

CHOM is owned by Astral media which is owned by Bell, which is owned by BCE Inc. 90%+ of all major North American radio is owned by like 3 companies (several thousand).

There are no DJ's that play music and there has not been since the 80's. Music is determined by a complex algorithm (software) that automates rotation rules based on sales figures from a central service. These rules are adjusted by daily sales/hour/date/style and can include rules such as manditory % of Canadian content, etc, etc. The software plays the music with minimal interaction from the DJ.

That is why all commercial music playing radio is shit and is literally the same in every city.

ps. One of the largest radio monsters is "clear channel communications" , which owns about 850 commercial stations and is in part owned by Mitt Romney, so you can say that some of those nicklesack sales are funding his presidential run.

Thinking about Leaving Engineering for Design by fast4xin Design

[–]wycks 1 point2 points ago

UX can be mixture of a solid artistic foundation , psychology (cognitive psychology is often a school choice), informatics, interactive design, web design, testing and intuition. Anyone can be good at it with a good understand of design basics, but only experience will make you stick to your guns.

I would recommend taking some art history classes or any classes on foundations of art that apply to design, web or otherwise.

These are good: http://stuffcreators.com/upod/

Thinking about Leaving Engineering for Design by fast4xin Design

[–]wycks 2 points3 points ago

If your ready for a difficult road and a large change in your life, then I guess.

Engineering is logical, clients want things, you deliver. There is very little opinion, it is technical, it works or it doesn't, that's it.

Design is opinion based, clients are difficult to deal with because they often have completely different ideas on design from your own. Design is emotional and many clients are retarded. Unless you have a really distinct style that people seek you out for (this takes decades usually), then it is often a frustrating nightmare.

You can get more into technical UX/UI (interface design and experience), this blends creativity with real world results and statistics, so even if your cleint is a retard that wants fancy ribbons on his site, you can back up your reasons with facts and tell him to stuff it.

ps. Usually only good clients hire ux/ui professions and they are typically part of a larger design team (applications, enterprise, large companies).

I design and code, and though design is a great creative outlet and a break, I prefer coding because I dont have to deal with clients poor taste and insane requests.

Is it rare to be a decent designer AND a decent programmer? by Diamonsin web_design

[–]wycks 1 point2 points ago*

Only because it takes a lot of time to master both, and it is also difficult to focus doing two complex things intuitively.

Programmers for some reason have this insanely stupid idea that designers just "know it". Well the same rules that apply to learning programming also apply to design.

The rule is it takes around 10,000 hours to be really good at something (not the best in thee world, just good). Picasso didn't just pick up a pencil and become a master , it took him, like many great artists an entire lifetime, and the same can be said for any skillful programmer.

Developing a plugin w/ a sidebar widget, what width should I use for the widget, to not break any sidebars/cause content to be hidden by matstarsin Wordpress

[–]wycks 3 points4 points ago

Don't use any width, in fact don't style it at all outside declaring the default parameters (make sure you use id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s ) . Plugins have no business changing styles unless you have a very specific reason, that is what themes are for.

I'm Making the switch from Dreamweaver to sublime 2. What all do i need to know? by ImLopshirein web_design

I'm Making the switch from Dreamweaver to sublime 2. What all do i need to know? by ImLopshirein web_design

[–]wycks 0 points1 point ago*

Well that is not my case, code completion to me is the same as having hotkeys, it speeds things up. In sublime I find I often have to tab 2x-3x more and type about 3-5x more letters to get what I need, it's a noticeable amount throughout the day. For example type "h" in CSS, in netbeans I get ""height" immediately tab done, in sublime I have to type "hei" tab then I have to type {}; so that is 6 more characters (this applies to a lot in sublime not just css, it is even worse for intellisense). When you get used to really good code completion/intellisense sublimes feels very sub par, unless you love typing and wasting time.

Also I find it hard to believe you don't get confused with very large codebases. In sublime if I have a project open with say 1k files and have been working all day on say 40 using hg, in netbeans I get small icon showing me commit status and file saves, in sublime there no such thing, visuals cues are not a bad thing they also speed things up.

ps. I don't expect sublime to do this, or ever be good at it, afterall its a lightweight text editor.

Table layout for Wordpress theme? by zulubansheein Wordpress

[–]wycks 0 points1 point ago*

That does not make it acceptable, she should invest some time into learning how markup has advanced. Tables have not been used for layouts for about 10 years or so, unless she works for microsoft ;) It is likely she is just using a wysiwyg editor in dreamweaver which is also not a great thing.
