Liz and Elly are both pretty awesome people, yo.

Don't worry, I was going for parody and dripping sarcasm. Oh, Poe's law.

Our fair city from 30,000 ft by cloud1720in Buffalo

[–]thetorpedodog -3 points-2 points ago

Okay, Buffalo is nice, but I think "our fair city" is kind of claimed.

With love,
Cambridge (our fair city), MA

(Don't worry, I enjoyed my several months' stay in Buffalo. ;)

Yes, if there's one thing that confers privilege in society and especially at a tech school, it's being a feeeeemale.

The misguided actions of Trenton Oldfield: The best article I've read so far about Saturday's events on the Thames by Aldousin Rowing

Also do check the comment section. Once you get past the personal attacks from both sides, it's surprisingly good.

[–]thetorpedodog 1 point2 points ago

No. This is not acceptable. This is a person going through a crisis, and you have the nerve to criticize their writing style?

[–]thetorpedodog 2 points3 points ago*

Hey. I can tell this is really, really hard for you. I completely understand why you're afraid of going to anybody else. Right now I imagine you feel completely stuck and alone in the world. You're not.

Don't feel bad for having been afraid. What you're going through is incredibly difficult, but others have gone through it before and come out stronger. It's okay to cry.

Try to find a teacher, librarian, or school administrator you can trust, and talk to them, even if it's not "your" teacher, even if it's a teacher you had years ago, or even if it's a teacher you don't know. You can tell them as much or as little about what you're going through as you're comfortable with, and they should be able to help you, both by just being somebody to listen, and somebody who can help you find people who can help you further.

Right now, nobody is going to be mad at you for anything you did "wrong". You aren't guilty here; somebody did something terrible to you, and it's rough, but I'm certain that there are people around you who live to help out kids like you who are going through hard times.

You don't have to stand up, or be proud, or face your friends right now. You just need one person who can help you in your crisis. Don't worry about getting in trouble—just find somebody you can trust and ask.

Stay strong. It's a cliché, but it really does get better.

EDITED TO ADD one more incredibly important thing:

It's not your fault. Don't let anybody try to convince you that it is.

Guy who stopped the Boat Race's blog - legit? by sage1314in Rowing

[–]thetorpedodog 1 point2 points ago

The discussion here, which is largely demonizing Oldfield, is really exactly what could have been expected from an event like this.

I wrote a wall of text about the protest that I don't feel like copying and pasting here, but in short: If you consider his worldview and motivations it makes some sense, but his protest and message were incoherent and he's not going to change any minds.

Teddy Bears - Zero Gravity. Amazing track! Another one of those underrated artists. by majikfxin electronicmusic

[–]thetorpedodog 0 points1 point ago

You can also download it for free and play with a fun visualization in the Google Play Music intro (US-only?).

(Or, you can skip the demo and just get it, but the demo is actually pretty cool.)

Okay, so I misunderstood the definition of jingoism. Congratulations, you win at Internet. That does little to change the fact that this post is obnoxiously racist.

Cool! /r/sports is the best place for jingoism and racism!

I'm new to the VX scene, I would like some feedback. by Reclaimer69in VXJunkies

Well, if it's feedback you want, all you have to do is plug your Athena module back into the crosscore modulator! That'll get you some feedback for sure!

I was literally about to make My First Effortpost™ on this. ShittyAskScience is normally so…not awful. Ugh.

I would make an effortpost about it, but there's really no point in just linking to every comment.

How can some Redditors not "get" r/circlejerk? by culturalelitistin circlebroke

[–]thetorpedodog 4 points5 points ago

In a twist of irony, Ron Paul Braverygate pretty much turned circlejerk from a place that mocked the circlejerkiness of Reddit into a circlejerk itself.

Grand Junction Railroad Bridge (aka BU railroad) bridge [pic] by shempeyin boston

[–]thetorpedodog 2 points3 points ago

MBCR uses it to transfer locomotives from their North Station–based service to their South Station–based service and vice versa, usually around 22:00. I have also occasionally seen very short freight trains on it, and also the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey train parked on a siding behind MIT once.

Good Guy Delta Airlines is LGBT friendly by djbennycin lgbt

[–]thetorpedodog 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, as nice as it is that Delta may be LGBT-friendly, GLAAD is little more than an astroturf group for its corporate sponsors.
