Well, some times clients can come to your rescue, but once the project gets over or you becoming less critical resource, you are a game again. We never allow our engineers much direct contact with client managers, the communication will go through on-site manager/lead (who is any way our trusted man,with good communication, manipulation/business skills). It will be very difficult for us to explain to the client about resentment/resignation/removal... of individual engineers. So, we take this onsite co-ordinator route normally.

there could be better teams and people out there. and what i have seen is a very minuscule of stuff. Do not take my words to your heart. As i said, if you are good, you can demand an environment around you and get it.

the difference is in what is sold to you as "workload", "innovation", "growth" by your employer(then you will appreciate my advice of just performing at average level and preserving your health and family). in companies that i have seen so far, there is a twisted logic to these terms, which would scare your types away.

If you could be choosy about your employer and the work you want to do, there might be better teams out there. I am sorry my post is at a discouraging tone (which is not what i wrote it for). It is up to the individual to decide and practice his profession the way he wants. if you are top class at what you do, you can demand an environment around you and get it. all the best.

I started as a developer 13 years back and there is lot murky stuff i have seen, which i do not want to put in here. Your idealized just world rarely works here. thats why i called you lucky. I agree my advice would be of no taste to purists, but that is up to you.

Right. They dont, normally. we are told that, it should always be made as voluntary one from the employee. If not, there will be negativity in the team, and the bad mouth our company might get (though chance of this affecting anything is remote, we always had a 1 lakh+ resume base to go through), the most important fact is, we are the ones who are supposed to explain to the team and fix any apprehensions, if we terminate an employee.

There are some strategies put in to our usual "effective manager" courses, just to address these kind of situations. The OP posted a typical case, as this is one of the most widely practiced thing.. giving the employee a very low rating so he himself moves out (note the long process he went through to correct it, but could not, the process is also meant to wear out). this strategy does not affect rest of the team, because they are only concerned about their own ratings.

for your second question, i used to have a childhood friend (who died when i was in school itself) and we used to tell each other about our dreams (the monsters, the faraway lands and other stories we made up just for the fun). i still remember him, somehow he is always there with me. those were the times i was so innocent and good.

and the flair? i was trying to get a biwi, who can give me some kids and cook pure vegetarian food for me.
