Daily Kos: The American left's biggest hypocrisy by Stonecarverin guns

[–]slavik262 4 points5 points ago

the libertarian fringe

Without starting a massive shitstorm (as things like this are apt to do), I think that the libertarian movement in the GOP is really expanding, expecially given how well Ron Paul is doing (no, he won't win the primary, but he's made quite the impact).

Feel free to disagree with libertarianism, but I think we can all agree that it's better than the theocratic neocon bullshit the makes up the rest of the GOP .

He's a great quote machine, but his actions hardly reflect non-interventionism or fiscal conservatism.

Yeah, how dare countries spend money on things besides space exploration! It's not like anybody down here on Earth is starving to death or anything!

Oh, wait.

Edit: Dialing back the sarcasm, space exploration and travel is not a moral imperative. Yes, it is crucial to the longevity of the human race, but we have much more pressing concerns.

Yep. Short-barreled rifle laws are a great example. For those who aren't familiar with SBR laws, taking an ordinary Glock pistol and putting a stock on it makes it a SBR. Unless you've paid a special tax stamp for it, congratulations. You're now a felon.

I disagree. The email is stupid and poorly (if at all) thought out, but not worth ruining someone's stable income over.

Hey, PMAGs! I knew that soldiers are allowed to buy their own equipment, but I didn't know this extended to magazines. It seems like it would be considered part of the weapon and therefore off-limits from modification/replacement.

The g-tolerance of a fighter pilot is around 9 g's. Bump it up to 10 and you can do some crazy maneuvers.

At any rate, I think it's preferable to sawing your legs off.

I haven't bought into anything. However, the USA is the only country that comes to mind that still gives me the legal right to defend my life and those I care about with tools of my choice.

Sorry, this list is laughable to me. Mexico, currently engaged in a massive civil war over drugs? Oh, and I can't bring my guns or buy one to defend myself because that's illegal. Sounds like a solid plan.

Backing off from the hyperbole, feel free to make your own choices, but I fail to see how such a restrictive nation is better than the US.

Did an ammo family photo in 3D, can you identify them all? by krzysdin guns

[–]slavik262 1 point2 points ago

Out of curiosity, what shading model is that using? I'll assume the image is ray traced due to the visible reflections of the cartridges in each other, but the almost total lack of specular highlight is throwing me off. Diffuse looks pretty flat too.

Through the glass - I can't find the origin of this photo; can anyone help? (I can find sites that use it, but no indications as to the source.) [1920 × 1200] by DocCalibanin MilitaryPorn

The clarity of this photo is amazing . The target is 300-400 yards away and it looks like you're right next to him.

For those of you who don't spend an inordinate amount of time at /r/guns and are wondering how I know, sniper ranging 101:

  • I'm using the original image as posted by BollTrait, since the lack of desaturation makes it easier to see what I'm about to describe.

  • See each dot on the scope? That indicates a deviation from the bore of 1 mil, or 1/60th of a degree of arc.

  • At 100 yards, 1 mil is equal to about an inch in distance.

  • Assuming the target's head and cover is about a foot tall, 1 foot is about 3 mils at the range we're estimating.

  • If each mil is about 3 to 4 inches at our mystery range, that puts us at 300 to 400 yards.
