Should I get a bike in Boston? by pk622in boston
[–]rmull 15 points16 points17 points 9 days ago
Biking is the best mode of transportation in the city. Just be aware of the possibility of theft. Keep your bike indoors as much as you can.
Buying raw pork fat around boston? Want to make lard. by HRPin Cooking

Just to clarify, The Butcher Shop is in the South End, not Southie.
It's a little bit more of a restaurant than it is a butcher shop, so heads up if it's not what you're expecting.

Unless you plan on using an IDE with loads of software dependencies and system requirements, developing in any of those three languages requires practically nothing in terms of computing power.

I tried a pair of Merrells but they're a lot less minimal than the Vivobarefoot equivalents.
Looking for a coffee drink. by Chokkissin Coffee
As others have said, it's probably sweetened condensed milk (and the drink may be mislabeled). If you try that and it's not what you expect, it might even be dulce de leche, which is caramelized sweetened condensed milk. It is golden in color and much thicker. You can make your own out of ordinary sweetened condensed milk, just look around on the internet for a recipe.
Why is Dunkin Donuts so special? by MalcolmYin Cooking
[–]rmull 2 points3 points4 points 19 days ago
I'm on the other end of this spectrum. I don't care for Dunkin Donuts much at all. I like my doughnuts dense, moist, and crispy. My favorite Dunkin Donut was the sour cream doughnut, but I haven't been able to find it in a few years. Maybe it's regional.

I started one on my counter in Boston, MA using nothing but filtered water and King Arthur's AP flour. It is very active, and I'm not a connoisseur so I can't really comment on the flavor other than saying that I like the bread it produces.

I have Dharmas for everyday use, and I love them. When these die, I will probably buy another pair.

Wrong Way Down A One Way Street: A Poll by zizekrocksin bikeboston
[–]rmull 3 points4 points5 points 28 days ago
I do it sometimes, but I avoid it in most cases. When I do it, I'm hyper alert and I cut my speed drastically. People don't think to look the wrong way up a one-way road, and so you'll find that cars and pedestrians will pull out into your path because they don't expect traffic to be coming from the wrong direction.

I went Monday and Tuesday. Would have traded both of them for today, though. I thought it was going to rain but it probably won't. Oh well.

I saw one of these just the other day! I assumed it was some new belt drive that I hadn't heard of. It was mounted on a folding bike, and the gent lugging the folded bike had just gotten into the bus I was riding probably due to the rain that had just begun.

Don't have a gooseneck kettle for that pour-over? by Beznetin Coffee
[–]rmull 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
The size is okay for me. I'll make a single mug pourover for me and a cup of tea for a friend - 1L is enough for that and then some. I also have a 1L stainless double-wall vacuum insulated thermos that I can fill all the way up if I'm taking my hot water on the road, so it's perfect for that.
I can see how it might be on the small side for someone making larger batches or entertaining a lot of people, though.
I have a Bonavita and it is a wonderful addition to my kitchen.

Bombilla in gourd, fill gourd about halfway with yerba, top up a thermos with boiled water, fill, drink, fill, drink, fill...

When looking for a cheap bike, is it worth building it yourself or buying completed? by gnumastin FixedGearBicycle
[–]rmull 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
Seconded. Buying complete is going to be cheaper unless you have the patience to camp Craigslist for good deals on used components.
However, if you're going to replace all the parts on it anyway, it may be cheaper (in the long run) to build up your own frameset.

No real reason. I just wanted to make sure the LED was visible if I had any cargo jammed up underneath my saddle or hanging off my back, and I didn't want to put it lower on the seat tube.
The hubs are your ubiquitous entry-level type. They're not going to turn any heads, they don't need much servicing, and nobody's going to try too hard to steal them.
[–]rmull[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago
No, this is the "raw" finish, which is just a clearcoat. Black would be black.
It's a Shimano PD-M324 with the outer cage removed.
Only recently put everything together. I have maybe 100 miles on this bike. I bought the Gatorskins because of the huge number of favorable reviews, and I have no reason to dissent at the moment.
I have Vittoria Randonneurs on my road bike, and those have given me no problems either after almost a full year of use.
No problems with it yet. It's probably pretty similar to most of the other low/mid level frames. The shaped tubing is probably gimmicky, but lends an interesting touch. I like the convenience of the integrated tensioners in the dropouts. Welds aren't anything to write home about. Things seem to fit fine.
Far down the road I'd probably think about upgrading the frame to something I'd be really proud of, but for the time being, it holds my components in the right spots and I think it looks nice enough.
