Whoa whoa whoa, leave cybergrind out of this. It's not his fault he's that way. Have some respect.

The OP said they made a few creative changes from the original, one of those I spotted was changing the time signature of Morning Bell from 5/4 to 9/8.

It works really well but it could have been put together way better... Tay doesn't have to sing every single line every time. If held off on the verses a bit more it'd groove way better. Not so much a remix as playing an instrumental and an a cappella at the same time.

I'm sure it's fine 'cause the guy who made the album put the download link in the video description.

This is great! I really like MTT's attitude toward talking about music. He sounds as fascinated by it as I am, and I guess he's known this stuff a little bit longer than I have :P

This is it. The first three beats of the bar have a 4:3 polyrhythm over them, and the last beat of the bar is just a straight crochet.

Ligeti - Continuum for Harpsichord by rcazin classicalmusic

[–]rcaz[S] 3 points4 points ago

Sorry, I threw this up here and then had to leg it for an exam. I was studying some avant garde stuff for college and I thought the idea was really interesting. Ligeti's work with electronic music meant he started understanding a bit more about psychoacoustics, and he was thinking about the lower threshold of human hearing, and how when events get sufficiently frequent (around 20Hz) they start being perceived as a continuous sound and not individual events. Ligeti noted how the harpsichord had such a light touch that you could play so fast and continuously that the sound could almost approach a continuum rather than a load of individual attacks. This piece was trying to build one homogeneous mass of sound from many many separate attacks.

Er, if that makes any sense. I'm pretty tired and a little drunk...

Yes, all the frequencies and wavelengths would change, but they'd still be identically proportional to each other. If you understand so much about these waves, how have you not realised that all of this is based on multiples and proportionality?

[–]rcaz 3 points4 points ago

Well if we're qualifying our comments with what we do in our spare time, I'm a theoretical physicist and musician. A harmonic of a wave is a component frequency of the signal that is an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency.

A wave that physically exists, with a frequency of some multiple of a fundamental frequency, is a representation or realisation of a harmonic, but it isn't the definition of a harmonic.

We should probably also be more specific about the fact that a harmonic isn't ever realised as a wave in itself, but as a component of another wave. 'Cause if it was realised in itself, it would be a fundamental frequency and not a harmonic relative to anything else. A harmonic is always relative to a fundamental.

question about a term by Grimsrasatoasin musictheory

[–]rcaz 5 points6 points ago

As Zalenka said, in the key of C it's IV - I, which sounds 'good' 'cause you've heard it a million times before. IV - I is also known as a Plagal cadence), used for centuries in Church music and a cornerstone of Western functional harmony.

I guess if you're basing 'really good' chord progressions around that kind of cadential gesture, learn about functional harmony. V - I is another classic.
