I work for The Independent - it's a fake. You can type anything into the URL - it's the number at the end that's important.

Dear website owners: please eradicate this wretched trend by rgowenin reddit.com

I just put these buttons on every page of The Independent site (www.independent.co.uk), so I feel like I should explain a little.

First, they drive a lot of traffic. That means ads, money, continued existence etc., which is all good news for us.

Second, they are, I think, a good way of letting people choose whether they want to read something or not themselves, rather than what a website editor they've never met thinks is important. If you look at the counts on these buttons you get a good insight into whether people actually find a story interesting (just like the Reddit frontpage...). Often this doesn't tally with the prominence of the stories on the site, and often we'll act on the successes reported by these buttons to help us highlight articles people have responded well too.

They are lots more reasons too; I blogged a fuller explanation at http://ind.pn/cWk3SS in case anyone wants to read more. I'd be interested to hear people's responses...

Thank you, OP, for posting an image rather than a link to the story which would make them tons of ad money.

I went to college with the guy to whom that bench is dedicated - the college is just round the corner. He was a really really nice kid, and it's fantastic to see this on reddit. Even if it did also make me feel kind of sad.

The new OK Go video plays with the speed of time: “The fastest we go is 172,800x, compressing 24 hours of real time into a blazing 1/2 second. The slowest is 1/32x speed, stretching a mere 1/2 second of real time into a whopping 16 seconds." by newsbeaglein science

It's kind of sweet. But if you'd got as many press releases as I have about it, you'd release the approach to 'social media' is kind of cynical

DAE feel that GTA: San Andreas was better than GTA4? by nzhdehin gaming

[–]oliverdaniel 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was the gameplay a figurative expression of the locations they were based on and the differences between NY and LA/SF? GTA4 was tense and nervy, pretty cramped and correspondingly neurotic, and LA/SF was sprawling, felt more open-ended, had more scope for creativity...? [I preferred SA - JUMPJET esp.]

It's not a democratic tool when the state uses its employees to hack into the email accounts of pro-democracy campaigners. And Google has done exactly what you said they haven't done - they're not pulling out, and they are continuing to challenge the regime, just much, much more robustly than before.
