Perhaps the answer is to plan the trip but never fully book or pay.

To quote a reader below: "E[x] = 0.5(-10) + 0.5(+20) = +5" This is the correct interpretation. Winning $20 means having $30 when you win ($20 plus your original $10). And, as the reader below also states, the law of large numbers means that the more times you repeat the bet, the closer you'll be to the expected value.

It's ridiculous, though, because it's not even close. Tips are basically doubled, swamping the credit card fee and actually doubling it (5% fee in NYC vs. 10% in extra tips). Now, the fees aren't entirely fair to the drivers, the companies are screwing them a little, but they still come out ahead.

Food Ads Make You Fat... Even If You Don't Buy the Food by neuroworldin Health

Though, it could be that the ads cause mindless eating on the couch without doing much for brand recall -- meaning they'd be doing harm to the individual without doing much good for the company.

Of course everyone makes their own choice and is responsible. That doesn't mean these effects don't exist as a matter of objective reality. They tell us to beware of people in groups and to think about how we can curb the behavior of people in groups.

She did the same acting in each scenario (when the subject was there live [complicit] and when they were listening to a recording [non-complicit]). Given that her acting was not a variable, I don't think it can be viewed as a flaw.

CNN FAIL: CNN's only failed in that it's not turned into a partisan shoutfest like Fox and MSNBC by neuroworldin politics

[–]neuroworld[S] 0 points1 point ago

A combative and partisan press is fine. It's what America has had throughout most of its history. It's what many other countries have. But there's still value in at least one news source striving to just present breaking news and the facts. Watching MSNBC or Fox if you're not a strong partisan is exhausting.

Person in question here: I post a mix of things from my blog, which shares my username (no attempt to hide the connection), and other neuroscience and cultural and political stories I find of interest. I'm a new user, so I've been putting up some things from my archives -- probably a bit much, admittedly.

Judging by the upvotes on many of my stories, I don't think these are things which the reddit community has found uninteresting.

But, again, I'm new. So, looking to learn the ropes and not step on toes.

Because the study was of white and black students. It's a very specific study about students' self-perceptions, related to stereotypes about their race. The point is: How do you make students overcome those stereotypes.
