I'm an english teacher in France and this was my 13 year old student's counter-argument when I corrected his spelling of the word "through". by nashk13in funny

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet, but there's no single Webster's Dictionary ... The name isn't under copyright, so any dictionary that wants to can stick a "Webster" on its cover, and a lot of them do. Merriam-Webster, on the other hand, is a specific, and well respected, dictionary.

You know, I accidentally open Outlook once every few months, and I'm still not exactly sure what it is.

Former president of Poland: criminalization of drug use was a mistake by Eraser1024in worldnews

No, it's the Americans who have the massive, ridiculous disclaimers in their ads. Here in Canada, they can either mention the name of their drug without stating outright what it does (think of those funny Viagra and Cialis commercials), or talk about a medical problem (let's say "erectile dysfunction") without mentioning the name of the drug they're selling. It's odd, I know.

I still do a double-take whenever anyone writes about "tithing" here on Reddit. I went to a Catholic school back in the 80s, and we were taught that tithes were as obsolete as indulgences and self-mortification.

Is it just me, or does Stephen Harper not seem like a "real" prime minister? He's been in office for over six years, but he still has the air of a stuffed suit who's occupying the office space until someone worthier appears. I didn't like Mulroney, but even he had "it". by mycroft2000in canada

I didn't mention his appearance at all. I meant his uninspiring demeanour; his aloofness and seeming incapability to make any kind of emotional connection at all when he speaks. I'm not saying a PM should always be a rock star like Trudeau, but one expects the longtime leader of a country to not seem so utterly replaceable.

He's really sloppy sometimes in his action movies. Even in Raiders: So Indy swims to the submarine, and it just happens to travel all the way to Nazi Island without submerging? Come on.

TIL the actress who plays Talisa from "Game of Thrones" is Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter. by jay4523in todayilearned

[–]mycroft2000 5 points6 points ago

Also, when she did that scene, she was an unknown actress in a new series that, as far as she knew, might have gone nowhere. She did it for exposure, so to speak. Now she has clout, so she can dictate a few more of her terms. I suspect the same thing happened with Evangeline Lily in Lost ... Season 1: major cheesecake. After that, with a guaranteed hit show: not so much.

Why TED Is a Massive, Money-Soaked Orgy of Self- Congratulatory Futurism - It has become an exclusive, expensive elite networking experience. Strip away the hype and you're left with a reasonably good video podcast with delusions of grandeur. by JackIsidorein TrueReddit

[–]mycroft2000 42 points43 points ago

They're not bullshit, really, but the talks are often banal, and rarely express an idea I've never heard before. I have no difficulty believing that TED's main purpose is networking, and I actually see nothing wrong with that.

Well, my Dad would certainly never have reached his age without help ... He had a quadruple bypass about 13 years ago, a cancerous kidney removed about 10 years ago, and he takes many medications of all flavours. So although I'm sure he has some good genes (he has all his marbles, is fully mobile, and still lives in his house at an age when many are senile and unable to walk unaided), he also has the benefit of Western medicine.

When I was growing up, in the 70s and 80s, a lot of movie theatres had ashtrays in the armrests too, even though smoking had been banned by that time. I do remember people smoking on airplanes, though, including my father. (How he's made it to the age of 85, I'll never know.)

As a middle-aged Caucasian male, I am also sick of these songs, although I enjoyed them 25 years ago. I find it incredibly irritating that so many guys my age just listen to the same stuff over and over and over again. Of course, I'm currently enjoying listening to Flo Rida, so I'm by no means considered an arbiter of good taste.
