A Participant's Critique of #Occupywallst by spongelukein occupywallstreet

I like the twist of words in the name. The Arab Spring was a movement from the winter of tyranny to a new season of freedom. The American Autumn leads not to freedom but to winter.

We can better achieve real change outside the voting system. Many young Americans and people around the world have realized this. Voting among young people is down and volunteering is up.

We can talk more about different voting systems but what good does that do? Congress is barely functioning. There's no way it could legislate a new voting system.

One major problem with it here in America is its path through the Nebraska Sandhills and the Ogalla aquifier. 7 states depend on the water in that aquifier. A spill there would be devastating to economies across the region and endanger the lives of Americans. http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/03/nation/la-na-trans-canada-pipeline-20111003/2

It's terrifying that a lot of American conservatives support moves like this. Water pollution is a direct threat to American lives. Clean water should be a priority on par with national defense.

Obama's Speech on Jobs Act... counterpoints? by fancyfeastsin politics

[–]mvxzw 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a strong case against it from the left. The American Jobs Act is very much a minimal effort that will do little to help the long term unemployed. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/sep2011/pers-s10.shtml

Even were his bill to be enacted in full—an unlikely eventuality—it would create a mere 2 million jobs, according to estimates by economists. It will take 11.1 million new jobs to return employment to the level that existed prior to the onset of the recession nearly four years ago.

What if instead of taxing revenues we taxed profits? by jthenin Libertarian

Jobs are inputs. Businesses hire people to do things when there is something to be done. If demand is low, as it is now, then businesses have no incentive to hire more people. Why would a business hire people when there's nothing for those people to do? Businesses would just find other ways to reduce or hide profits.

Have you been watching his press conferences and speeches over the past year or two? The Obama we saw during the 2008 campaign seems to have died a while ago. Back in May Obama held a speech on the Arab Spring - he showed up 45 minutes late and just kinda mumbled his way through when he finally arrived. Normally I'd see this as a liability for a campaign but his potential opponents aren't much better.

Yep. He propped up the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau as a solution to the frustrations that protesters have and said Republicans are trying to stop it.

He said that's the Attorney General's job and that he has full confidence in AG Holder. Obama said the President can't go around saying prosecute this person or that person. If someone has broken laws on the books then they'll be prosecuted.
