What is the saddest thing you've ever witnessed? by RastaMomin AskReddit

[–]mkcondorcet 0 points1 point ago

This is how it's relevant.

If she is some exploitative shithead who is using the kids as panhandling accessories, by buying the kids food he can benefit them without rewarding her for dubious behavior. A lot of people do this in China because it's a common hustle - they see an adult beggar with kids begging alongside him or her, and they buy the kids food because the adult beggar is oftentimes a conman/woman.

It's a common hustle I've seen in a lot of places - beggars who are neither needy nor in want using children (often not their own )to garner sympathy.

Christ - don't be so naive or judgmental - a lot of beggars are not genuinely in need, but are instead parasitic hustlers preying upon the compassion and largesse of strangers.

A little late to the party but would just like to say Phil that my family and I were huge fans of your work on MadTV earlier last decade, and think that you guys knocked the socks of Saturday Night Live at its beset. I especially loved your UBS guy, your black country singer, and that sleazy pick-up artist character (forget his name).

A friend of mine told me that in the comedy industry Saturday Night Live alumni have a huge advantage after they finish their stints on the show because Lorne Michaels has such huge show business clout, and that unfortunately he also harbors a grudge against MadTV cast members (Artie Lange also said as much on the Howard Stern show once). Can you shed any light on this?

You don't think average IQ of a nation is somehow influential or even crucial in determining it earning capacity and affluence? Sometimes glib answers can be truthful.

If these guys were serious about changing the country they would have just joined the party or become officials. Becoming an activist is for people are vainglorious and love attention.

It's an interesting read - like a lot of activists they are a bunch of incompetent, over-idealistic egotists.

Non-Americans who have visited the US: What surprised you the most about the US, and what surprised you the least? by jumbletonin AskReddit

That's a real pity - a mile or so is nothing, and a long walk brings such tremendous health benefits.

You're lucky to live in such a beautiful city and state.

People in New York and San Francisco do a ton of walking from what I recall.

With the exception of Global Times, I find a lot of opinion pieces in the Chinese media - even the People's Daily - to be pretty reasonable.

Agreed - I've never seen anyone in China who looked famished or shoeless, and wasn't obviously mentally unwell.

That's really not true at all.

I've traveled in rural Guangxi, rural, Guiyang, rural Henan, rural Inner Mongolia - visited a lot of mid-tier cities, small towns, and farming communities. I've never seen anything that I would refer to as grueling poverty or squalor. If anything smaller towns and cities have far better living conditions than the major cities, because they are much less polluted and all their buildings and infrastructure are new.

China's definitely a developing country and reports of its affluence in the West are most definitely exaggerated, but I've lived in the country for years, travelled through it extensively and never seen anything I'd define as extreme poverty or squalor.

I've never seen anyone eating garbage - seen people piss in public on more than a few occasions, but never seen anyone consume refuse.

As for people sleeping in the streets - I see way more homeless people in medium-sized American cities than I've ever seen in any Chinese city - including the mega-cities of Shenzhen, Shanghai or Beijing.

True that those deformed beggars are extremely sad and disturbing. It's not as though there are hordes of them swarming the streets of any major metropolis, however.

There's no argument to make. The argument you mounted initially was pointless and irrelevant. This is why my statement that your reasoning is defective remains valid. Sorry.

My argument isn't meaningless at all and your application of logic is almost as poor as your historical knowledge and your use of English. Sorry to break it to you pal.
