I'm on here to save my favorites before deleting my account. I don't want to be here anymore shrug. So I'm leaving. It's that simple. I don't want to be in a community where members are this dumb; I don't think the content on reddit is interesting anymore--I've either seen it posted before or can read it anywhere else. I don't think the comments are worth reading (I can almost always predict the top comment before even checking, because they are that obvious). It's not cowardice; it's a personal corrective decision to not surround myself with angry, negative people who don't really appear to have lives beyond collecting imaginary internet points. I have no obligation to visit this site--I hardly ever check it as it is, so I'm just going to stop altogether. I think that much of the bigoted content (see: any race thread in the past year) that flourishes in this site is worth bringing up, if only to point out that we should collectively attempt to be better people, to support better ideas. The problem is, much like the real world and most other corners of the internet, stupid people unavoidably outnumber the smart ones and on a populist site such as reddit that ensures that I'm no longer learning anything or being entertained. Rather, it seems to be the collective wisdom of teen boys who are taking a break from XBOX live, and that you think it's actually enlightening or worth reading says more about you than me. I have a life and it's better without wasting my time here, I believe. That people are angry at someone for leaving a website (who fucking cares?) is pretty ridiculous; I left my comment to make people think, to state an unpopular opinion, and the outcome was as I predicted. If anyone read my comment and even considered them, if it made them think about their words or inspired them to be a better person in even the smallest way, then it was worth it; if not, then oh well. Later.

You know, as a gay man, I don't feel very welcome on reddit anymore and unfortunately I think this will be my last post as a result. I don't feel that this community is inclusive of me. I'm disappointed that nearly a thousand people sanctioned your comment and only one person stood up and implied that it's not cool to use that word. I feel like I'm back in middle school.

The reason the term "faggot" has a negative connotation to begin with is because it originates as a term for homosexuals, which it implies to be an inherently detestable thing, and thus an insult that can be used towards anyone. However, in real life, many of us have been called "faggots" as a means of harrassing and bullying.

Sigh I know that many of you are good, intelligent people reddit, but I believe you've finally been outnumbered. Good bye.

edit: I'm not exactly an active redditor anyway so I'm not really at loss, but allow me to clarify. I came to reddit primarily for the science and programming community that kinda dominated the site back in the day. Now, it's more like ebaum's world with 4chan as commentators, and the popular comments are about as intelligent as that would imply (see below). I'm not crying myself to sleep because someone used a bad word on the internet. I'm more disappointed that it's on reddit, a site where people use to have discussions that were funny and intelligent. Look, the guy's comment used a word that I personally think is just unnecessary and inappropriate (as I do the word "nigger", another reddit fave), but it also made me realize that, dude, the users on this site gave 1000+ upvotes to a comment that is not clever or funny at all if you have an IQ over 100. Shit, the other day I logged onto this subreddit and one of the top submissions was asking why people refrigerate eggs (!!!). I'm getting out before I catch the stupid. Not a big deal. PEACE.

the viewer is at least supposed to be keeping an open mind about the acceptability and possible necessity of violence in extremely tense/oppressive situations.

Bingo. I agree with you by and large and I felt the same way when I first saw it, especially because Spike Lee says a lot of crazy shit and I don't have trouble believing that he would hold some very extreme views. I do think the question posed in the movie is one worth asking though. It really did make me think.

Apple Inc and its main contract manufacturing Foxconn agreed to tackle violations of conditions among the 1.2 million workers assembling iPhones and iPads in a landmark decision that could change the way Western companies do business in China. by arte_misiain worldnews

Let's put it this way, when problems are discussed and brought up apple faces them and looks to correct it as opposed to playing a Game where they hide from it or ignore it.

Er, didn't this scandle break like two years ago, and wasn't this still an ongoing/unchanging issue to present day? If you'll notice, this change of heart comes after years of media criticisms, bad pr, and other vocal pressures to do so. I'm not really a PC fanboy, I've owned multiple apple products and don't really have my heart invested in either, but to say that Apple has high ethical standards, and that that is the motivation or is self-evident, is a belief I find hard to buy. Particularly when this was the company that, apart from other large technology corporations, has a clearly its stated position of not practicing philanthropy.

And can I provide evidence? Probably. But I don't care to...

Until you have evidence, it's just your opinion. It doesn't seem right to praise a company for admitting it's part in the death and injuries of people in developing countries, and then condemning companies that are equally as bad simply because they weren't the subject of as intense media scrutiny, claiming this as evidence that Apple's bar is much higher. They had a report on working conditions that showed their involvement in horrific labor practices, and they commented on it, and a couple years later they did something to correct it following international publicity that they likely found threatening. Am I supposed to be impressed? Grateful, to apple? This should have happening long, long ago. I'm glad it happened, but praising Apple for this is like BP agreeing to take extra precautions to avoid oil spills and being praised as a moral company. Its absurd.

Yeah, but I wouldn't say it's as drastic as The Simpsons, agree? I mean that the characters/stories/animation didn't drift as far as the Simpsons did, even if the older episodes of Futurama were probably just better.

I think this is also similar to what happened to The Simpsons. When their original writers left to work on Futurama, the show as we know it was basically done. Not that the new episodes can't be enjoyed, but they certainly lack that humanistic quality.

I agree. I said I agree in this instance that it shouldn't have been deleted, and I agree that there should be exceptions, but I disagree that mods shouldn't be able to delete anything on the subreddits ever because of the voting system.

While I agree in this instance, I think there should be some kind of incentive to post in the correct subreddit. Otherwise we just have people adding irrelevant things and we ruin it for people who have selectively subscribed and filtered the content they want. True that many people don't care either way, but it's not really fair of those people to trump the people who do and expect them to sift through all the content. I think that if someone added a simple Advice Animal meme to this subreddit, for example, then it should be deleted because it's the wrong place and many people here may have unsubscribed from r/funny so that they wouldn't have to see them. Many users are not discriminate about upvoting or downvoting things based on subreddit relevance, and the mods are there to enforce these things because the users are unable to.

edit: I don't mind being downvoted really, but I'm confused as to why. It's just my opinion, and I listed some reasons to help people understand why I believe this. It's relevant. We can disagree with peoples opinions without hiding them so that no one else considers them.

We also have a 15 trillion dollar deficit and public universities (as in, universities that already receive a lot of government money) cost about 15,000 dollars a year for tuition alone IF you are from that state. Danish education does not cost as much. The idea that we can just raise taxes a little bit and then everyone gets to go to school for free is an oversimplified view of how something like that would work in the US, or anywhere else really. Greece also offers free education and it's contributed to putting them in the pits.

I see these figures a lot, but I never know where they're coming from. Can anyone point me to the study that shows what percentage of the prison population is atheist? I'm not necessarily expecting anyone to be able to find me the original study (since this is a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost), but if you have it then please show me because I'm interested but also tend to not believe something just because it's in an image.

Not those two verses; that general section between Romans 5 and Romans 15 discusses what we're talking about, but more-so between Romans 12 and Romans 15.

Romans 5-15:3. There are also examples elsewhere in the New Testament where God says that the followers aren't required to follow Levitical law, such as in Acts 10 where God gives Peter animals that are not kosher and then tells him to kill and eat them because these foods God has "made clean". These reasons combined form the belief of Christians that "mosaic law" is basically irrelevant for people who are "under grace".
