I had to cover New Born in a band once. In practice I modified the main "verse" riff to be much easier to play, because I knew the actual riff but was sick of playing it as we kept going back over the song.

Do you play the chorus octaves with your ring or pinky finger? I teach bass and a lot of beginners avoid using their pinky, but (unless you have really long fingers) this will overstretch your ring finger, force your hand to work harder, and tire yourself out.

I can see what you mean about it being easier, but would it really be that bad to just edit the programs yourself when you have a lot of time? I can't think of very often when I'm in a live setting and needing to immediately change some parameter. That being said, I might be leaning towards the M9 now - the response here and on Talkbass to the same question hasn't been stellar.

I did something very similar: set up a wireless network with the name "DELLUSER" or something like that. It was the name from a weak network in a nearby building, and nobody was the wiser (not that my RA would have cared in the slightest).

I agree that I anticipate enjoying real pedals more than multi-effects (I've only used one multi-effect in my life, a mid-90s digitech which was awful).

For me now, as you said, I sort of want it a) to play around, and b) to "hold-over" and a great many expensive effects which I can't afford right now. Examples are: high-end delay, compression and reverb. I would want to get really nice pedals for all of these, but have not the money right now - M9's are on Craigslist or Talkbass for under 300 all the time, so financially it seems to make sense to me.

Thanks for the input! My band also plays around with different styles, and I definitely know what you mean by "doing too much" without adding to the actual music (my bandmates sometimes joke that I should've been a guitarist). Two questions: 1) What do you use to set up a true bypass loop? I've been looking at the Barge Concepts VFB-X, which might seem like overkill but the feedback loop and expression pedal --> blend options seem really useful. 2) I've heard rumblings that only Line 6 Exp Pedals are supported - is this true?

The worst part is that it infects everywhere around town. Starbucks? Yeah right. Atomic Coffee doesn't even have seating outside. Red Eye is so packed it takes 30 minutes just to get a drink, let alone sit down.

I'm actually now leaning towards an m5 the VBF-x (just because it's insanely useful anyways) - I can life with just one expression ability for the m5, esp. since I still get tap tempo, blend (using vbf-x) and tap tempo in a much smaller package (the m9 is too much for me).
