There are even some Evangelical Christians who have made scientific and engineering contributions. A lot of different people of various beliefs have played their part in the history of science and technology.

Problem? They can do what they want with their investment. Be glad these students are involved in scientific experimentation. You don't change minds by barring people who believe differently than you do. That last bit isn't necessarily directed at you, but Reddit in general who is usually hostile to any theists, even ones who want to learn and participate in science.

An overwhelming majority of U.S. citizens want deep and immediate cuts in military spending, according to a new poll. by batgirlsingsin politics

I've been trying to tell people that the space industry would be the perfect way to retool the defense industry. If this nation committed to colonizing space, mining asteroids, and space manufacturing I think we could retain many jobs and create many new revenue streams.

Diplomatic relations between two countries are backed by two things: the carrot (economic power) and the stick (military power). Otherwise, a strongly worded letter is just toilet paper to the recipient country.

Why shouldn't Edison be idolized? He was a great businessman who could market his employees' ideas well. In a capitalist market, being able to sell an idea is almost as important as the idea itself. Tesla was a great inventor. Edison was a great businessman.

Scientists plan to deliver a coffin to Downing Street on Tuesday to protest about "the death of British science". by andrewinmelbournein worldnews

[–]ikktomi 22 points23 points ago

Scientific research is at its best when the scientists have the proper resources necessary to be creative and curious. If the allegation that the EPSRC is trying to focus on research that has more immediate applications to industry, then that approach to research is misguided, tight budget or not. I'm an American and I hope my government doesn't pick up the mentality that all research must have potential applications. Even my country's military understands the value of pure scientific research just for curiosity's sake (See DARPA).

Not sure why everyone is being so cynical. It was built with prefabricated modules. It is entirely possible to construct a safe building within a short time period with pre-fabs.

Just landed a job interview at Gen. Dynamics. Looking for some interview tips/advice. by f00piin engineering

[–]ikktomi 1 point2 points ago

Yes, you are right. They are looking for someone who fits the qualifications of that particular job. But to come out on top of all of the other candidates who also have those qualifications and more, one would need to demonstrate something that sets you apart from everyone else. In my case it was my nerdy hobbies. I come from a small university that lives in the shadow of a huge top 10 engineering university. I decided to do my best to show the recruiters from these Fortune 500 companies why someone from this small no-name school is more qualified than the candidates from the top schools that these companies mainly recruit from. Thankfully it worked.

Companies want to know mainly one thing: what can you do for them that brings them value or reduces their costs?

The hobbies I have listed on my resume are all things that I can talk about that demonstrate why I will be a long-term asset to the company.

(1) Examples of software I wrote on my own time for learning purposes

(2) Public speaking for a number of charity events

(3) Science fiction short stories I wrote

Those three hobbies demonstrate value and I tell them how: (1) I learn software development on my own free time; (2) I am a good speaker and active in the community; (3) I can write and think creatively.

I also created a blog/portfolio site that documents the various things I have done, so if the recruiters wish they can see for themselves.

Thank you for your insight. However, I think you underestimate how many people would volunteer their lives to being the pioneers of colonization, whether space habitat, asteroids, or moon. Admittedly, I do not know how many of these people would actually have the mental and physical aptitude for it to be a success. And as you seem to have indicated, humans probably need genetic modifications in order to live "normally".

Hah. What's funny about that is how much /r/space was ridiculing Newt Gingrich for suggesting a moon colony when /r/space talks about doing it almost all the freaking time. If someone Reddit doesn't like says it, then it is a bad idea instantly.

I'm not in favor of a Mars colony either, but bringing up our inability to pass a healthcare bill doesn't mean we can't get other projects done. There were enormous social problems in America in the 1960s. We still went to the moon. We also had political problems and wars in the 1990s and early 2000s and we still sequenced the human genome. There are different groups of people working on different projects. Many of them do not care if you or I think they cannot do it. They will try, some will succeed.

You are right about Mars, but for the wrong reason. We won't colonize it, not because it is "impossible", but because the smart people will realize Mars is an extremely inefficient and wasteful way to colonize space with our current technological capabilities. We will be colonizing asteroids and building space habitats at the Lagrange points instead. Closer, plenty of resources in asteroids, and without the huge gravity well. The biggest long term problem of all space colonization efforts will be radiation shielding.
