I opened a box that was shipped from China, and this was written on the inside of the box. Can anyone please translate what is shown... by cloutsmanin ChineseLanguage

The more-or-less direct translation: Friends without free time or dreams get together to have 1,000 drinks and reflect on life.

The meaning: Busy people drink with friends to feel happy.

I'm assuming Finntroll was at a high-profile festival. The last time I saw then North of the border, they played in a bar with under 50 people (2008, San Diego).

Heh, good luck with that. We could never get the indicator bulbs to agree with which direction I wanted them to blink. Had to settle for:

  • 2 Right bulbs, 1 left
  • 1 Left bulb, 0 right

A pretty typical ollie north by henboffmanin skateboarding

It's a one-footed ollie. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater called it an "Ollie North", and thus people who grew up with video games as their introduction to skateboarding now call it that.

Riding boots. by Damogran6in motorcycles

[–]howheels 2 points3 points ago

To answer your question, yes there is a difference. Good motorcycle boots will have a protective cup around the heel and toe to prevent crushing, protection for the ankle bones (preferably both inside and out), and assuming they are full-size boots (which many people on reddit seem to avoid), protection for the shin bone. A full-size boot will also prevent the boot from slipping off in a crash. A good motorcycle boot will also be designed to allow some degree of flex for operating the gear lever, but also resist torsional rotation or twisting.

OrangeCounty terrified, how is it there? Potential to move to that area from the Midwest by randomguy85in orangecounty

[–]howheels 1 point2 points ago

You don't need to take my word for it.

From the CA ARB

Engine Changes

Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:

  • The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.

  • The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.

  • If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

  • All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

  • Vehicles converted to 100% electric drive, with all power supplied by on-board batteries are considered in compliance with the engine change requirements. All fuel system components must be removed prior to inspection. For additional information contact the ARB helpline at (800) 242-4450

Unless there are some exceptions for cars that have already had the engine change, and certified in that state, these are the rules you need to play by to comply with the ARB and pass certification from the state referee, all of which I went through myself.

Audi to announce purchase of Ducati next week by imgreekyoin motorcycles

[–]howheels 1 point2 points ago

I can only assume that I know what you're hinting at (see flair). All I can say is ... Go take a test-ride. I guarantee you'll change your mind! The Multistrada is also amazing. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, surely the guy riding the Monster is not on the bandwagon of people complaining about Ducati losing the "purity" of their super sport racing image, right?

OrangeCounty terrified, how is it there? Potential to move to that area from the Midwest by randomguy85in orangecounty

[–]howheels 0 points1 point ago

You'll need to either pay for the parts or pay for the inspection guy to look the other way. All cars older than 5 years require bi-annual inspection, visual and sniffer test. Engine changeover requires a more rigorous testing to get a sticker, and the requirements are very strict. One of the requirements is the engine must be from the same year or newer as the chassis, so get ready to look for some shady smog inspection shops.

Hells Angels leader sentenced in mortgage fraud scheme. by readersevenin news

I've ordered plenty of combinations, some good, some bad. But I can't really do much better than the Counter Burger signature burger. It's got all my favorites. Mmm I think I know where I'm going for dinner tonight.

Waving goodbye as I get my first ride in the vette. by hathewayain cars

So much nostalgia. My dad had a 64 Vette, same color. He sold it about 15 years ago, but I had a lot of good rides in that car. I got to drive it a few times when I finally got my license, and that thing is scary when you step on it.

This is what stops an Audi R8 GT (xpost w/Cars) by J_Drivein Autos

[–]howheels 5 points6 points ago

Common people, don't downvote someone for asking questions. Dual-caliper setups are not totally uncommon. Google it up and you'll find plenty of applications. Braking power is almost always determined by the tires. When attempting to improve brakes, generally the areas of improvement are feel and cooling (resistance to brake fade). How a dual-caliper setup contributes to that, I don't know. Maybe I should try it some time.

Whats your take on ABS, do I need it? by snitchelgroovinin motorcycles

[–]howheels 0 points1 point ago

I signed up for the MSF ARC pretty shortly after I bought my Diavel, where we practiced emergency stops all day long. I had not experienced the ABS kick in yet, so the Rider Coaches encouraged me to try it out. My experience with it, on the Diavel at least, was nothing short of amazing. I grabbed a fist-full on every stop, and was able to quickly and controllably come to a stop each time. ABS on a motorcycle is no gimmick. It's the real deal, and it can save you from a crash. It's been over a month since I've taken that MSF course, and I have not needed to use ABS on the road a single time since, but that's kind of the point. It's there for emergency maneuver where your survival instincts take over, and your not able to properly apply the brakes without locking up.

While watching some of the other students in the MSF braking, it's easy to see how sketchy things can get when you exceed the tire grip threshold. Mostly the other students locked the rear wheel, but a few managed to lock the front as well. It's a good idea to practice emergency stops frequently so that you know how to avoid locking the wheels (and how to respond if it does), but I have to say it's a HUGE comfort knowing that I don't even need to think about the possibility of a lock-up in an emergency.

On the down-side, I think once you get used to ABS, it's difficult to go back. I feel a little uncomfortable on my other, non-ABS bike now. And I think if the time comes to purchase another bike, I will certainly heavily favor bikes that are ABS-equipped.
