'Methinks' always comes at the end of a sentence. even in the original quote where the queen goes, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

This is exactly why you are not taken seriously. While everyone grieves and appreciates the effort to bring back a missing person, it is Reddit policy to have a place for everything. There is a dedicated subreddit for missing people and this girl, however special, is no more important than any other reported missing person who are denied posting in this subreddit! Stop being an unfiltered idiot and try seeing the reason. People who are making that point have a perfectly valid reason to do so.

I want this girl found as much as the next person, but if this is here to stay then moderators should step up and make it a clear policy that unrelated stuff can be posted in this subreddit as well. She is ent is not a good enough reason.

TIL 25,000 flesh eating turtles were released in the Ganges River in India to consume up to 100 partially cremated bodies a day. by Domino_Raindropin todayilearned

[–]hooliganking 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that's idiocy.

That's easy for you to say when you've had all the education in the world and have modern amenities at your fingertips. You are mostly talking about people here who are happy if they have a lightbulb in their village, and higher education to them is signing their name in mothertongue! Do not demean their poverty. Calling them idiots is like calling your 200yr old ancestor an idiot for his beliefs.

Idiots are those who knowingly and then willingly do shit like that.

It means that poor people who drink or bathe in that stuff when they don't have to are idiots.

Agreed. But here's the deal. The number of people drinking Ganges water to quench thirst is extremely rare if not nil. Almost all of the country, no matter how poor, has access to atleast deep tube-wells.While that water is not pure, it is much better than drinking directly from the river. It is a tradition though that sometimes during occasions, people need to taste Ganges water as holy water. Most educated people decline that, and even those who don't, don't swallow. you are supposed to touch it with the tip of your tongue to cleanse yourself or some shit like that.

Bathing is rampant near the holy city of Varanasi and it is purely religion and belief based. Also I think you'll find it interesting that not all of Ganges is filthy. Ganges before it hits Varanasi is still holy and plenty of people drink or bathe in it and it is not that bad because the dumping of body filth mostly happens in Varanasi. I guess you need a visit to Gangotri to change your views, ever so slightly about that river.

But all said and done, there are just plain idiots who drink or bathe in it for fun, or as you say because of poverty. Now that is a kind of poverty that most of modern world can't even imagine. No amount of reading books and watching documentaries will give you the real picture! Add to that religion, lack of education, shut out from outside world and ignorance, and then you see, calling them idiots is not fair. Because that is all they know. Yes they'll die from tuberculosis and blame it on their heredity with a smile, for e.g. " it is the disease of my father and grand father!" implying it happens in his family often and he is kinda proud to go away how his predecessors went. Now would you call that idiocy?

Bottomline? people who don't have to actually don't. And people who do, they have no choice.

Edit: I support what you've otherwise said, that it does give rise to dormant diseases and affects in a bad way. I have no intentions defending a river being so filthy that it threatens life. But it is an unsolvable problem. You cannot ask Hindus to stop dumping bodies into that damned river. They just wouldn't listen. I dunno what measures can be taken to clean it though. I grew up next to the river when it almost reaches its delta, and it is not so bad then.It would be nice to have it clean though. But it is true that I never get the flu while all my non-Indian and Indian friends from other parts are always down come the flu season. My original statement was to add hilarity to the overall discussion though. You made it waaay too serious.

I don't think you get my point at all. The only upside of being exposed to dirty water etc is that you get a stronger immune system.

And how much do you really know about Indian people living next to the river? You don't have to be upper middle class to get access to a doctor and clean water. and that is not why people take a dip in the shithole river in the first place! All I am saying is that the only upside of that river is , you get better immune system. Indians are usually not paranoid about infections even though they too, have killed off the really nasty ones.

You are a moron if you take unnecessary health risks if you are poor.

What does that even mean?

[–]hooliganking 0 points1 point ago

It has nothing to do with belief. That river is filthy, I grew up next to it. It does strengthen the immune system though, but that's pure science. Not some religion bullcrap. My parents wanted me to drink a lil bit of that water once, and I threw the fucking bottle outside. Parents were livid, but they were being stupid. They have smartened up now. Thank God!

Well it is true that swimming is a disgusting river all your life makes you pretty immune to common diseases. George Carlin did a piece on how he swam in the Hudson as a kid and that resulted in a stronger immune system. Am pretty sure that can be said about Ganges too, maybe.

Edit: found the transcribed version of Carlin's piece: http://scottmacknight.blogspot.ca/2008/04/george-carlin-fear-of-germs.html

We were always told to be wary of those little fucks while taking a swim, they bite so clean that you wouldn't realise when you'd lost a foot. Only when you took it out of water, the pain and the shock starts to set in. I personally saw a case like that! The guy was doing his morning prayer standing knee-deep! Not to mention, I never ventured into that river ever. Except a couple of times where it is actually clean before the dumping of deadbodies in varanasi. For everyone here who loathes Ganges for being so polluted, there are parts of it, especially close to its source of origination where its clean and quite pleasant to swim in. Cold too!
