Please Don't Become Anything, Especially Not A Programmer by tompa_coderin programming

[–]greenrd 0 points1 point ago

Coding is not important anyway.

Programmer salaries would tend to disagree with this notion.

We don't need more code, we need to solve problems.

And just how are we going to solve problems without writing some more code along the way?

You can't become a programmer if you only know a little bit of programming.

That's not really true - you can write spreadsheets.

In Euro Crisis, Iceland Emerges As an Island of Recovery by greenrdin Economics

[–]greenrd[S] 0 points1 point ago

no, it does not.

Its government does, at least.

Iceland did not refuse to return the money, it refused to pay relatively high interests on the amount

It has refused any of the structured repayment plans that have been put forward. That is at least a technical default (and actionable under EFTA rules).

most of the money has now been repaid from the estates of the bankrupt banks.

You are right that some of the money has been repaid. But most? I'm not sure about that.

[–]greenrd[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well, fortunately we have ways of making them pay - firstly, the EFTA court, and if that doesn't work, Iceland wants EU membership, and we won't give it to them unless they repay our money.

The technical term is "nominal wages", as in "no one's nominal wages were cut".

I don't follow. Icelanders decided in a referendum to default. They didn't decide in a referendum to offer guarantees on the Icelandic deposits of British depositors before the crisis; their government did that.

Rupert Murdoch should be done for perjury. He said at the inquiry into press standards that the Daily Mail acted out of commercial considerations, which News International would never do. That's some chutzpah.

I think you'll find there are plenty of white men who've also been convicted of child sex offences.

Some of them even emigrate to Asia to more easily take advantage of young girls. Gary Glitter was not the only one.

Jubilee street art in Turnpike Lane I saw this morning by NaturalBeatsin london

[–]greenrd 0 points1 point ago

Yes, what with the levels of unemployment in this country, the country is clearly crying out for child labour to be legalised. It would just make so much sense! We'd have even more adults out of work and even more illiterate young people.

Endgame for the Euro? by spikein Economics

[–]greenrd 5 points6 points ago

Gordon Brown really had no choice. It was the British people who were dead-set against joining the Euro, and therefore he had to craft criteria that would look reasonable to pro-Euro voters while not actually meeting them and not actually joining the Euro.

The British people have themselves to thank for the fact that Britain never joined the Eurozone.

Endgame for the Euro? by spikein Economics

[–]greenrd 4 points5 points ago

Pretty much the same as what's been happening in the Eurozone. The states have made cuts; at the federal EU level, spending is in fact still growing. Although the EU is much more decentralised than the US.

Linus Torvalds doesn't do github pull requests. by WarlizardGamingForumin programming

[–]greenrd 1 point2 points ago

Why does there have to be an "official Linux"?

There would be a coordination problem if there wasn't. Or more likely, a de facto official Linux would arise, but it might place too much power in the hands of one company.

Linus Torvalds doesn't do github pull requests. by WarlizardGamingForumin programming

[–]greenrd 93 points94 points ago

Linux is unusual among open source projects in that it receives a vast volume of contributions that require reviewing on a daily basis. As a consequence, Linus' time is very valuable, and it makes sense for him to chastise people who send him contributions in an incorrect format, especially given that the correct format is documented right there in every kernel source tree.

Are Databases and Functional Programming at odds? by aahendriksenin haskell

nor even as a reactive element (unless we ensure exclusive control, linearity).

Why is exclusive control of the database by an application so implausible? And what do you mean by linearity?

Any time we want to impose equivalence relations or constraints on this, life gets interesting.

That's where you might use implementation hiding (which does not require OOP but merely a module system).
