Abbott remarks on Thomson 'breach law': Crimes Act prevents threatening MPs by glengyronin australia

Yeah, I think the Crimes Act there is more imagining blackmail rather than silly doorstop interviews.
Military to lose annual flights home by falloutman1990in australia
[–]glengyron 1 point2 points3 points 1 hour ago
Not really a big deal.
It should be offset with a little more money in their salary perhaps... since we're only talking about a few hundred dollars at most.
It didn't really work that well anyway. If you're from from QLD and posted in QLD, like most of our forces in reality, you never got to use this benefit anyway.
Given the choice between weird benefits or cold hard cash, take the cold hard cash every time. Then you can drive home, visit the family when flights are cheap, or spend the money on something you choose to.
The forces have such a complex and weird bunch of benefits that totally obscure their actual salary and conditions. It's almost a deliberate ploy to make them feel like they're getting more.

Joe Hockey on gay marriage, and Penny Wong's amazing response by alemenoin australia
[–]glengyron 13 points14 points15 points 6 days ago
I think it's remarkable for being that moment when you can see where a glib poorly reasoned position, such as Joe Hockey's actually effects a real person.
Hockey didn't actually have a reason for parenthood changing his mind on gay marriage. Frankly, as a parent myself, I think you should become more compassionate when you have children rather than less.
Hockey might be the bad parent on that stage.
How Jackson, Lawler and Abbott tangled Thomson with the HSU by glengyronin australia

It's a blog, it's more than likely bullshit, but it was still interesting enough to be worth a look I thought.
I never understood why Gillard created FWA was going so hard after a Union, and, why Kathy Jackson wasn't in the frame even though she controlled the union during a lot of these shenanigans.
This doesn't answer if Thommo is dodgy or not (of course he is, right), but does help answer the question of why the FWA took SO FREAKING LONG to do the report.

Yeah, there's a good chance everyone involved in this is rotten in one way or another.
We'll see. People like Barnaby Joyce and VexNews (both on the hard right) think this whole situation stinks and I'm inclined to agree.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mal Brough didn't see an opportunity to topple Gillard and get his a seat in parliament ahead of the 2 year time scale he currently has to wait for.
[–]glengyron 7 points8 points9 points 9 days ago
No, the really weird part of this circus is that criminal allegations of fraud were included in the filing of a civil claim in the first place.
If you've got an allegation of a criminal matter, you take it to the police. You don't add it to the filing of an unrelated civil claim.
As the media universally is pointing out this morning: If Ashby's lawyers didn't remove those claims the commonwealth would have had them removed.
As for how shift Ashby is: Well he's got a criminal conviction for making menace against him.
[–]glengyron 5 points6 points7 points 9 days ago
Nope, the specific claims, regarding blank cab charges being handed over where shown to be wrong.
That's what was in the court case, the fact that Slipper may have done other dodgy things wasn't what Ashby claimed.
They were always exceedingly weird things to be tacked onto a sexual harassment claim anyway.
[–]glengyron 10 points11 points12 points 9 days ago
It's not unusual for a statement of claim to be amended.
What's amazing here is that the Speaker of the House of Representatives was forced to stand aside on the basis of claims in a civil filing that have since been dropped.
The claims as stated in the original Ashby filing were shown to be completely factually wrong.
Our democracy is pretty fucked if not much more than a rumour can be used to change who controls the parliament.
