I'm not sure if I agree with ShadowRam on the issues here, but your comment's beside the point. Sleep deprivation, extended solitary confinement, emotional abuse... These can all be forms of torture, and they can occur without inflicting physical pain.

Going off your sarcasm, honestly, Raimi really avoided Spidey's inherent humor. He made ONE joke in all three films (nice outfit—did your husband make it for you?), which avoided the greatest character attribute of the hero/man behind the mask. Peter is fucking SCARED out of his pants every time he takes on a serious villain, so he motor-mouths to distract and anger them and calm himself down. At least that's how I read into it. Taking that away removes the whole conceit of Spider-Man, the regular joe who's doing what he thinks is right because he has to. I'm hoping this reboot brings more of that in.
