Askscience AMAs: May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month, Ask A Neurosurgeon About Brain Tumors! by foretopsailin askscience

[–]es-335 3 points4 points ago

  • I've always wondered how surgery on one's brain is possible while the person is awake and fully aware? (Comparing it to dental surgery in my mind, but of course that doesn't seem to rival the severity and sensitivity of working on the brain vs. a root canal while they're awake!)

  • Roughly how much total time (er, years) and money have you invested in becoming a neurosurgeon? (Of course if the money part is too personal then some idea of the time would be great, I'm currently deciding on a few possible paths myself.)

  • One I've always wanted to ask a neurosurgeon: Have you watched any of the TV series House, and if so, do you find the medical jargon and situations fairly accurate?

Thanks so much sir/madam!

Thoroughly enjoyed this! I don't pay much attention to the success/failure of films at the box office (home theater, maybe once every couple years I go to the cinema), so I wasn't skewed any which way prior, thankfully. Kitsch is a solid lead, I definitely remembered Collins from Wolverine and she was excellent here (sexy as hell and a really good actress despite this being a cheesy blockbuster).

The effects were amazing, the main achievement being how seamless everything was (I can't help but imagine the nightmare it is for all involved with so much going on constantly). The "Virginia" gag was great and the dog was adorable! Admirable execution making what should be a grotesque other-planet creature a cute and lovable hero sidekick.

Obvious shrtcomings of such a film were some bad dialogue and cheesy plot (and as to how he's breathing on Mars, this is a silly sci-fi visual feast, even the anal science-geek part of me didn't bother with that), but this was very entertaining and I could have watched another 2 hours of it, I didn't notice the time at all by the end.

The St. Patrick's Basilica's website has a bulletin indicating $1.45M for facade repairs, of which just $250K has come from parishioners, and $288K from Parks Canada. Is this legit in Quebec? [PDF] by es-335in montreal

Thanks, that's what I was wondering, it did seem apparent that it was standard stuff a la UNESCO, but just wanted to check with Montreal folks here :)

As an Ontarian who follows and tries to raise awareness of the issue of our RC school system, I'm just curious if this is all square in Quebec, which in my experience seems the most secular population in Canada.
