Los Angeles bans plastic bags at all supermarkets by mepperin environment

[–]erietemperance 0 points1 point ago

The supermarkets do sell reusable bags, and they are cheap. But I like the plastic ones because I can use them in my bathroom gargabe, or to pick up dog poop from the yard and on walks. I also use them organize things. For every plastic bag I get, I use it at least once after the fact.

So if my state banned plastic bags, I would just buy a box of plastic bags every time I go to the store, and probably put the box of plastic bags in my reusable bag.

I don't think the point is "how accessible" alternate bagging is. If that was the case I could just pull my car up to the register and not use any bag, no matter what the cost. Or just carry it out in my arms.

The point is that the government is making a false market.

Suppliers of plastic bags are going to lose money, lay off employees, pay less taxes, and use less resources. All of that will hurt the economy.

If the government is literally "by the people and for the people" we wouldn't need to ban plastic bags, because nobody would ever use them in the first place. The fact is a lot of people like them, use them, they are cheap, effective, and useful. And bans will only harm our economy.

The movement against plastic shopping bags gained a lot of momentum today after the Los Angeles City Council voted 13-1 to phase out the use of plastic shopping bags at supermarkets. by louiebaurin environment

This is such a first world problem.

It's times like this I am glad that I am a white, college educated, male, living in North America.

Yeah, Bags, fuck them!! Boo pro bags!! (while I type on plastic letters, in a plastic chair, drinking from a plastic cup, using my plastic mouse, ,

All the wile I put corn (food) in my Jeep (plastic dash) and shit in fresh water (plastic toilet paper holder, soap dispenser) , fresh water that is delivered to my house (which has plastic shutters) and I drink the fresh water out of a plastic cup.

I'm so glad that our arguments aren't over real things like or President Killing his own citizens, putting innocent people in jail, or lying to get elected.

The answer is for the grocery industry to simply do without bags and force customers to bring their own.

If any store did that, nobody would shop there again. If the real issue is the recycling of the bags, why not just burn them or bury them, Plastic has a lot of carbon in it and will biodegrade, I just get uneasy when the government tells me what kind of bag I can use. How do they even enforce that? I own a small sub shop, will I get fined, arrested, shut down?

The fact is that right now "the people" don't really care what kind of bag they are given, and if a government "of the people, and by the people" claims to know better than the "people" themselves, our problem is not the plastic bags, it's the government.

All this is going to do is raise the supply of plastic bags, and lower the demand. Making them very cheap for other states/countries.

This really doesn't help the environment very much. Just means that there are less plastic bags in LA, and more everywhere else.

Even if every country, state, county, and city banned plastic bags it wouldn't lower the amount of plastics being introduced into the environment. Plastic is a byproduct of oil production. So if no more plastic was being used for "bags" there would be a large surplus of plastic creating chemicals and oil byproducts. Historically when there is a surplus such as this, the prices go down, and we see the product where we haven't before. For example, if plastic became ridiculously inexpensive it may be hard to find a "can" of soda, they may all become plastic.

I'm not saying it's bad to stop using plastics. Just a gross miscalculation of how markets work, if in fact, you are trying to use less plastics.

How does r/Libertarian feel about abortion? by punnettcubein Libertarian

[–]erietemperance 4 points5 points ago

First, I would never vote for, promote, or support any law that banned abortion. I wouldn't boycott a doctor that preformed abortions, and I would never go out of my way to make someone feel bad for having one.

That being said, I do think it's really fucked up that people abort babies. From most stats, if you are passed the 6th week you have about a 90% chance of having a child. Before that between 50% and 70% miscarry (most are in the first few weeks and the mother doesn't even know). So if you get to the point where a doctor tells you that you have a fetus in your body, and unless some major traumatic event happens, you will create a human. Just fucking have the baby.

Birth control is about $25 a month (if not free), morning after is around $45 (if not free), condoms are even less (if not free). If you have sex and are not on birth control, didn't use a condom, and didn't get the morning after pill, then ended up pregnant, and didn't miscarry in the first month. Just suck it up and have the baby.

I've actually looked into that before, and I don't think this is that.

In Las Vegas, there is a place that will "wrap" your car with an advertisement. But the process is very long. Just from the 15 minute phone call I had with one of their reps, you have to, pass a credit check, background check, and have a great driving record. They want a head shot and make you fill out a very long survey, where they ask you what kind of car you have, what your hobbies are, where you drive, how much you drive, ect. and when it's all said and done (if you pass) they put you on file, and if a corporate client likes everything from your look, to your car, to where you frequent you may get the "wrap".

Then when you do get the "wrap" the make you take a course in promoting their product, if anybody asks about the wrap you are supposed to recite a short promotional speech and then give them a small sample of the product that you keep in the car.

That being said, although plausible, I doubt all of these people and cars passed that kind of rigorous "mobile billboard acceptance process".

From the evidence in the video, I don't see any "asshole trying to stand in front of" anything.

I see a van driving through a crowd of people, and not stopping, for at least 100 feet, while there is a person on the hood.

By your rational, anytime any person needs to be anywhere, they have the right to run over anybody who is in their way?

Even if they guy did jump in front of the van, the driver should have stopped.

And IMO, you shouldn't be driving that fast through a crowd of people, not matter what the circumstance.

My Ex got over $300 a month, and she traded most of it for bar tabs and cigarettes.

My sister gets over $800 a month and makes $40 an hour,

I have no problem with helping people in need, but the process we use is horrible. Of the hundreds of ways you could give a person food, sending them money is the worst way, , Mail them the food, or make them pick it up, or have someone bring it to them. But just sending money to people who have never been checked out is so fucking stupid.
