Obama to Israel: No US War on Iran by unclefredin politics

The USS Enterprise is on the way, and I think the the Abraham Lincoln & Carl Vinson are the ones already on site. In addition to 2 major amphibious groups.

Obama to Israel: No US War on Iran by unclefredin politics

[–]elementalist 8 points9 points ago

I have been reading differently. Many sources are saying different things.

There is only one real fact so far: we are sending a 3rd carrier and strike group to the Persian Gulf. 15k troops went to Kuwait last week. Another 50,000 are staging in Diego Garcia for deployment on Socotra island (Yemen1) and Masirah (Oman). This in addition to the 50k+ troops we already have in the region. The "exercises" have been called on but the movement of men and arms continues.

This could be one big game of chicken. Or we could acknowledge that when the military goes through the trouble of setting up all their toys they usually want to play with them.

Who knows what is really going on? But whatever it is, it is a pretty good chance the MSM doesn't have a fucking clue and will do what they are told and whatever you read and hear is going to be distorted and filtered six different ways from Sunday.

Nook Tablet comes with a locked bootloader making custom ROM installation much more difficult. Let B&N know what you think of this. by mrinfoin Android

Do I really need high def on a 7" device? Granted I don't own a HD tv so maybe I am pretty easy to please but I am fine with the standard media I play on my NC and it takes up a whole lot less disk space.

Does Netflix not have non-HD streaming?

Linux Partition by notatreein linux4noobs

[–]elementalist 0 points1 point ago

It's been awhile since I have done this but normally one of the first things a linux install will do is bring you to a point where you can partition, allocate space and format part or all of your hard drive. IOW what you have already done should be done during the install because it can format the space into ext3, ext4 or whatever as well as break down the allocation of space into /home /boot etc..

Paul Krugman Calls Newt Gingrich ‘A Stupid Man’s Idea Of What A Smart Person Sounds Like’ by jonessodaholicin politics

[–]elementalist 1 point2 points ago

Newt Gingrich is like a good looking girl in middle school who "goes steady" with an idea for about 12 hours before moving on to the next popular boy.

That said, a Republican who at least engages some post 18th century ideas is something of a novelty.

The number of people who believe conspiracy theories is staggering. According to various recent surveys, a third of Brits believe Princess Diana was murdered, a quarter believe the moon landings were faked, and 84 percent of Americans believe 9/11 was an inside job. by Orangutanin politics

[–]elementalist 1 point2 points ago

I really never saw Bush as involved in 9/11. Elements of the government who are skilled in overthrowing and manipulating governments more frequently than some people change their underwear...maybe so.

The most unquestioned part of 9/11 wasn't even officially part of 9/11 - the anthrax mailings. Dead and seemingly forever forgotten...

In their default install some people aren't satisfied to make a point, they have to be a douche about it.

[–]elementalist 6 points7 points ago

84% for an inside job, meaning Bush & gang. No.

84% of Americans who are unsatisfied with the official explanations, whose hair stands on end over all the unanswered questions, coincidences and and seeming reluctance of anyone in authority to really pursue a whole hearted no hold barred investigation? Quite possibly. yes.

If that makes me a wacko, at least I am in the majority for a change.

[–]elementalist 1 point2 points ago

Why do so many people obsess on a desktop? It really doesn't make that much difference to my life. Am I a freak? A power user? A non-power user? Just lazy?

I spend 99% of my time in applications. Either I am on the command line or an editor or watching a movie or playing a game or surfing the web. I doubt 1% of my time is involved with the desktop. It is just a mechanism to switch between applications for me and they all do that more or adequately.

Seriously, I don't get it.

Are police becoming militarized? by twolf1in politics

[–]elementalist 12 points13 points ago

In some respects it makes insurgency easier though. You don't have to take out a National Guard armory to get your hands on some good stuff, just the local police precinct.

Sorry. Every now and again I like the read the right wing crazies literature. However loony they are they have really thought through stuff like this in some detail.

IBM Open-Sources Potential "Internet of Things" Protocol by expertvoicein opensource

[–]elementalist 1 point2 points ago

Wow. I started off thinking "Oh cool..." and within a couple of paragraphs turned to "Oh fuck...".

For every socially positive aspect to this there is at least as many (probably multiples thereof) negative implications. Talk about both the Big Brother and black hat possibilities! So they can track your cash? Your sneakers and underwear? In what possible ways do they think this is a net gain for ME?

Not that I imagine there is damn thing that can be done to stop this or similar initiatives.

P.S. Anyone else immediate know what IBM was pushing the second they saw the name Message Queuing Telemetry Transport?

N.H. Judge Upholds Right to Record Police in Public - “The fact that Officer Montplaisir may have been unwilling or unhappy being recorded does not make a lawful exercise of the defendant's First Amendment rights a crime,” Tenney wrote. by Mind_Virusin politics

The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on this in August. This is just that ruling filtering down to the lower courts.

This kind of stuff doesn't fly in NH and the police position was ridiculed by every spot on the political spectrum. Not to mention the Weare Police Department which was involved in this case has one of the sketchiest reputations in the state and more reaction may now follow.

Flat Taxes and Angry Voters by filmfairin politics

[–]elementalist 1 point2 points ago

What many people seem to want is a simplified tax, not a "fair" or "flat" one.

Most people who get excited about a flat tax lose enthusiasm quickly when they realize they will get a tax increase. What they really seem to want is simplified certainty: here's what I owe, it's so simple no one can fuck it up, and no one has mistakes (or deduction stretching) hanging over their heads for the next seven years.

Whether a formula for this is actually doable remains to be seen.

What do you mean exactly by "not being accessed ok"? Inconsistent data? Segfaults?

There is no reason you can't directly access a global static so I am guessing you might be barking up the wrong tree. Can you provide a small code sample of your problem?

How does one teach sarcasm recognition?

I worked for a startup that spent 40 million dollars on some cool tech but the company didn't make it. Their best (and only) offer when they were trying to sell the remains was $5,000 for one part of the software stack. For all intents and purposes it should have just been thrown up on the web for anyone to use.
