So: who uses a stand-up desk? Yea or nay? by dreadswordin AskReddit

Umm. The yea/nay was an off the cuff way of soliciting feedback.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Every river I saw was silted up like crazy.

I concur with the folks saying merch will be at best a distraction. Focus on your core competency: making coffees and food. Diversify the menu to reach your audience - if heat is the issue, iced drinks. If the town has a big summer fair, get a branded iced coffee cart there.

Pet owners of reddit: How do justify feeding and housing dogs and cats when there are homeless and hungry people in your city/state/country? by dreadswordin AskReddit

Reddit could sure use an @username syntax for mentions, so that critical notifications like a call for Shitty Watercolors get seen!

Sure, I hear what you're saying. I suppose my thinking can be reduced to suggesting that we collectively spend too much time in the grey area, to our individual enrichment, and collective detriment. Edit: Guilty of this myself, in spades.

Autocross? Road? Nice. Been there; never made the leap to r-compounds, thought. I spend my money on the same type of stuff as you, it seems, but I'm not super proud of it.

Sounds like you're doing good things, and I applaud that. I hear what you're saying; as I've noted to others, everyone needs to decide for themselves what their priorities are - but I'll still go on record saying that doggy birthday parties & spas don't seem like a priority that advances the health of our society.

Oh come now, you sound like a neocon quoting Ayn Rand. Everyone's spending priorities exist on a continuum. I'm positing, based on my observations of retail and popular culture, that in one area of scope that is directly comparable in terms of the needs it satisfies (food/shelter), we have gone to far toward one end of the continuum.

You know what though? If you pushed me on it, I would agree that baldness research is silly when cancer still exists.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Take it to the extreme in one direction, and my line of thinking ends up where you're suggesting it would; take it in the other direction, and its Ayn Rand's wet dream. What I'm advocating is a degree of balance, a shift along the spectrum towards caring for people.

I hear you. I understand companionship. I've had pets myself, and I know the value. That being said, I thing there's more room in our society for balance - when I see the doggy boutiques, etc., it strikes me that we've lost our way: pampering pets before people have the most basic needs. I suppose the same could be said about all of the other ludicrous excesses one sees (purchasing a BMW, for example), but as I noted in a different reply, I see a direct comparability between purchasing food/shelter for a pet, and purchasing food/shelter for a person.

If you do plenty to help the hungry & homeless, that's great. You're doing better than I am.

In regards to searching for other cures, etc., you're over extending my logic. My point is simply that money spent buying food or shelter for a dog or cat could be spent on food or shelter for a person in need. Looking at food/shelter spending allocation only.

Speaking to the "majority" pet owner here, not those with companion animals, seeing eye dogs etc. I guess at the end of the day the "doggy birthday party" pictures and proliferation of pet spas, gift shops, etc. is making me question people's priorities.

Could a solar flare really kill all the power? by rountreyin PostCollapse

[–]dreadsword 0 points1 point ago

Well, the irony of course, is that any devices so protected (assuming my ghetto microwave trick even works) would have nothing to charge off of -- I should really start throwing an inverter in there and keep a bank of disconnected car batteries somewhere. Or just print out wikipedia every few months...

Every time spaceweather forecasts a flare, I store all of my portable electronics in an unplugged microwave.
