How do you practice Wu Wei? by ChangingYangin taoism

[–]d9-thc 0 points1 point ago

A lot of times when I try explaining wu wei to friends and family, they say things like, "oh, so it's about being lazy?" It's not about that at all. I still work, I still go to school, I still have my own projects that I devote my time to... but I especially like the explanation of wu wei that equates it to a tree, or flowing water. It does, only by not doing. I generally don't get stressed out about things (we all do, but since beginning my casual studies of the dao a couple years ago, I think I have improved a lot). When things don't go my way I just chalk it up to the natural order of things and move on. I don't try to force things, I just take the path of least resistance in what I do. I do what I feel like doing, and in doing that, I do what needs to be done.

Yep, the dreaded "foreigner tax".

Things that are more expensive than a month of VPN service:

-My weekly cell phone usage
-A taxi ride
-Eating lunch
-An import beer

I'm curious why any foreigner living in China wouldn't have a VPN.

I wasn't referring to daoist texts specifically, but rather all books. I've been continuously reading the dao de jing for a couple years now .

This is from a newsletter I just started publishing recently. While not specifically about Daoism, I will feature a lot of Daoist stuff and eastern philosophy. I've already done some Alan Watts. It would mean a lot to me if some of you would subscribe and give me feedback on my project!

Also, (because I can't read 5 books a week, try as I might), I'm always looking for new book excerpts/short essays to feature. If you have anything to recommend, let me know!

Well, I guess we could get into a really philosophical discussion here. It could be (quite convincingly) argued that the increase in and vast majority of local-on-local violence would not be so were it not for the massive presence of a foreign invading army. At what point are the American forces absolved of responsibility? It's an illegal war that has needlessly killed over half a million people (and only around 1 percent of them being Americans), and displaced many millions more from their homes. Decades of foreign military intervention/meddling in that region has been responsible for turning once prosperous (relatively speaking) countries into dangerous war zones with little semblance of a normal, functioning, society.

Show me a hero, be he American or Afghani or Iraqi, and I will applaud that person's deeds. But by and large, terrorism, whether by means of crashing planes into buildings or by willfully participating in an invasion, is worthy of nothing more than scorn. Some guy posting a picture of himself in combat fatigues on reddit isn't worthy of a "thank you". We have no way of knowing if he just came back from disarming an IED and saving his platoon or if he just came back from blowing up mud houses and killing civilians. Blind, jingoistic military worship is a dangerous thing.

My two cents.

Elephant. Great movie about a school shooting. by dawnday9622in underratedmovies

Honestly, I thought it was poorly done and quite boring. The acting was bad and so was the script.

For every American soldier serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, at least a few locals have been killed by the American forces. Statistically speaking, odds are those serving are more likely responsible for having murdered people than not.

I'm Flying to China in the Morning.. Any Advice? by Filthy_Utterin China

[–]d9-thc 1 point2 points ago

I would disagree with this advice all around. Marlboro & Marlboro lights are readily available throughout China, even in third tier and smaller cities. If you want to impress people with your fancy foreign cigarettes, I suggest a different brand (Camel seems to be popular among the Chinese... I had a roommate go all the way to the airport once just so he could buy like 5 cartons of Camel at the duty free shop).

Also,

you can probably drink them under the table

No. If you have never had baijiu before, do NOT try to drink a Chinese person under the table. You will get alcohol poisoning before their face even begins to get red.

Yes, I've done it multiple times before I came to China.

This is what happens when a traffic light goes out in Beijing by d9-thcin videos

[–]d9-thc 0 points1 point ago

Well, now I live in a newer building (less than 10 years old), while the old building was 30+ years old. I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 people total (myself included), but the old one had five bedrooms and 8 people total (!!!). The old apartment was actually much closer to the center of the city, where I live now is a student district and pretty inconvenient for when I want to go see friends in other parts of the city. Also, now I have a living room, which the previous apartment didn't have!

My rent is 3000 RMB (~$500 USD) a month for one bedroom in a two bedroom apartment, but I live in a comparatively expensive area. My first apartment here, my rent was 1200 RMB a month for a bedroom (<$200). I'm a student.

There's traffic at this intersection every evening, but today the traffic light next to the subway station was out and traffic was backed up for miles because of it.
