I would like to know one situation where Chinese is much richer than English. As a guy who is currectly "high intermediate" Chinese, I can believe what you are saying, but I have never personally experienced it myself due to my own limitations.

Han Han (韩寒) on his recent trip to Taiwan (x-post from /r/Taiwan) by Kapernaumovin China

[–]colorless_green_idea 4 points5 points ago

As a guy who is burnt out on "Chinese culture" (been on the mainland for three years now), this article made me want to give Taiwan a try. As far as the way people treat eachother, it sounds closer to Japan than it does modern day mainland China. If Taiwan also gets to be grouped in with "Chinese culture", and if Taiwan is as nice as Han Han makes it out to be, then perhaps there will be a day where I won't want to puke when I hear the phrase "Chinese culture."

Open up your options. Make western women compete with women from East Asia, Russia, etc. You don't actually have to confront or deal with western women. Just ignore it. Plenty of women from elsewhere who want you (or green card/money).

你可是天子脚下的子民 (?) by logospogos220in ChineseLanguage

[–]colorless_green_idea 0 points1 point ago

"天子“是指 Emperor ,“天子脚下”在中国古代是指capital. 子民是指people(in old china, we all think of ourselves as the emperor's children). So the sentence mean "You are the people who live in Capital whic near the Emperor.

Yeah the article was from when I first came to China in 2009. At that time it was 6.8 to 1. Can't seem to find the original article.

I'll be the first to say that I completely agree with the article. But I'm not complaining. I am putting my money where my mouth is, packing up, and leaving in July.

What are some of the hardest parts about oral English for Mandarin speakers? by jawndiseasein China

"I am so boring!" when they mean to say "I am so bored!"

Just want to expand and clarify on some of yours to the OP!

The example "I yesterday with my girlfriend go cinema" is because in Chinese, adverbial phrases all come before the verb.

The make that is often confused with "let" is the "to make someone do something" make, not "to make a pizza" make! So you get sentences like "The teacher always lets us to do homework everyday."

I've learned Mandarin, and it seems that the only strange movements come from the throat when pronouncing tones. I don't necessarily feel my tongue or mouth moving in strange ways when speaking.
