Student's English Names! What are the best you've had? by stickbloodhoundin korea

[–]coffeeisblack 1 point2 points ago

I had a Rider. I wanted to call him Ghost Rider, but then he suddenly became Rex. Now, it's Lex. But, the "L" sound and the "R" sound are kind of the same, so I don't know. Lrex...

Same. I had a Spanish name when I studied Spanish in high school; Mateo, which is like Matthew. And when I get talking to a Korean person in English I ask if they have an English name and they always do.

AMA Request: A cameraman from the show Ghost Hunters by frecklefart88in IAmA

[–]coffeeisblack 1 point2 points ago

Sort of on topic. My friend hung out with Ghost Adventures when they were in my home town. They were drinking with him and confessed to doing a bunch of coke and bullshitting because they didn't find anything. My friend is also an arrogant meathead.

Easily the coolest thing I've ever found in a trashcan! by HPIDDYfanboy101in pics

The hat and hair reminded me of Penn Jillette, so I went searching for a picture of Penn Jillette wearing a hat. I didn't find it, but I did find this sweet picture of Dave Navarro. True story.

Why is it to make korean friends in Korea? by yusiyein korea

[–]coffeeisblack 1 point2 points ago

I totally agree with daewangbo. Here's a place to get started. If you're new to the subways and buses, it's not too difficult. Expect to make a couple errors and move on. Bounce right back. And if you have a phone with applications, get jihachul and seoul bus.

High School Dropouts of Reddit - what would you do to solve the dropout problem facing many US school districts? by StinkinFingerin AskReddit

[–]coffeeisblack 0 points1 point ago

A drastic change to the school system that would be way out of the government's budget and would take too many years to implement, making the people and the government impatient and lose focus on their priorities.

Which movie did you love as a kid and then upon watching it as an adult you realized it was utter shit? by Ititchestoomuchin AskReddit

[–]coffeeisblack 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say Three Ninjas, the original. If you think about it, it's just a TMNT Home Alone love child. Loved it when I was maybe six years old. Now, I can only get through the first twenty minutes. It's all "Hiyah! Hiyah! Hiyah!" And I just want to reach through the screen and slap these kids.

Reddit, I'm a 22 year old Korean American, and I'm going to Korea for the first time. What should I expect? by thesuspiciousonein korea

[–]coffeeisblack 1 point2 points ago

You summarized my first couple months very well.

Maybe it's just me, but my lips chapped like crazy. Stopped when I bought a thing of Vaseline at E-mart. Then, not long after, I had a sore throat, runny nose, and something like a fever (skin hurt).

And the Soju and cigarettes are crazy-cheap. I usually do a big bottle/pack every couple weeks.

Think about joining the YMCA. I swim. It's the best part of my day and it's nothing like back in America.

Considering teaching in Jeju. Any insights into living/teaching on the "Island of the gods"? by Permapaulin korea

[–]coffeeisblack 3 points4 points ago

I actually passed up a chance to teach in Jeju because I was offered a job at a school with very high standards. I'm in Yongin, a half hour from Seoul. I have buses and subway stations. I'm exploring a new city every weekend. My point is mainly to consider the school and its demands and your comfort level. Also, consider the availability of anything you may want.

In response to a recent post, ANYONE UP FOR A MEETUP IN SEOUL? by aeiousometimesyin korea

[–]coffeeisblack 0 points1 point ago

It is very crowded. Here is a picture I took.

If it helps, I'm in Suji. I've only been here a little over a month, so I don't know a lot of good places. I know I'm close to Suwon and I can get there. Also, I've been to a great American-style place in seohyun station called travelers and it has beer, bacon cheeseburgers, and an open mic on Wednesdays.

Seoul English party on Facebook. I went to the one in Gangnam a couple weeks ago. And it seems like they have one every Saturday night.

cheap cost of living? by carthcarthcarthin korea

[–]coffeeisblack 0 points1 point ago

I like to cook. I have a stove top and bought a microwave at lotte mart for 50,000. I buy a big thing of lotte brand sliced cheese, bread (which seems to go bad fast), soybean cooking oil, frozen French fries, frozen and breaded pork cutlet, eggs (very cheap), soju, orange juice, and the occasional big bottle of hite.

First day of teaching English to a bunch of Korean middle schoolers... by LadyNerdin TEFL

[–]coffeeisblack 0 points1 point ago

I just started getting some respect the last few days. I've been here a month. I hope you don't go through what I did, so here's my advice; show you're interested in learning their language and they'll try to help, warn them you'll send them to the principle and they'll soul will leave their body in fear, and finally and most importantly keep them busy.

Godspeed.
