People with Diabetes vs Diabetic People? by chocokelin diabetes

[–]chocokel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Most of the diabetes sites I visit are pretty good about using "people with diabetes" or "people living with diabetes" but I do see language like "healthcare for Diabetics" etc. in things like advertisements and news articles.

Really great article for female pump-users! I don't use one, but this article helped me think about it. by forgotoldusername1in diabetes

[–]chocokel 2 points3 points ago

It interesting how much designers of insulin pumps think about just the medical side the pumps, and not the social health part. Oh biomedicine, why are you so concentrated on practicality alone?

Urban Outfitters; all of their clothing is way over-priced and looks like it was made by 5-year-olds(which it very possibly may have been).

I am currently 235, and I want to be between 205-210 but- by DandaMagein diabetes

Ok, I may be a noob to diabetes, but I am not a noob to exercise. My recommendation, is that you work with both your diet and exercise. It is true that exercise alone will make you more receptive to insulin, but you will be able to maintain the weight you want more easily if you work with both. What you want to decide first is how much you would like to exercise. (like 10 min of weight training right before 30 min of cardio four times a week would be a good start.) Then you need to determine how many calories you want to be eating everyday. (Your doctor/ a nutritionist/ or a personal trainer at a gym might be able to help you with this.) Then in order to get a good percentage of how many carbs you should be eating, try using sparkpeople.com for a couple of weeks to calculate the nutritional facts for EVERYTHING you eat. (This will be a pain in the ass, but you only need to do it long enough to get an idea of what kinds of foods work for you.) And as this might cause a drastic change in the way your body chemistry has been working, you will need to test your blood sugar a crap ton more. That part is especially important. And when you do exercise, make sure your blood sugar levels are higher than you want them to be before hand, because longer amounts of exercise will make them drop fast. (You probably already know this, I just want to cover all the bases.) Good luck!

If I'm ever pretty low before physical activity, (I'm a modern dancer) I will dip some wheat thins in honey. That way I have a mix of both fast and slow acting carbs with out getting to full before I move a whole bunch.

[–]chocokel 9 points10 points ago

I second that. For anyone who cares to know, if she were passed out like that, it is a lot more likely that she would need a fast acting sugar (like orange juice or glucose tablets), because her blood sugar would be too low. Insulin would actually make the situation worse.

TLDR: Comic is unrealistic. Feed passed out diabetics sugar, don't give them insulin.
