I think the OP's idea applies more to Protestants than to Catholics. The Roman Church tends to remember how the bible came to be more than do Protestants -- especially fundamentalist evangelicals.

Protestants having rejected the authority of the Pope and his institution, had to replace it. The bible was the replacement. The bible becomes the final word, the very word of God and therefore almost God himself.

The bible doesn't work very well as the final word, because it has to be interpreted. Therefore the Protestants became very divided very quickly without the central authority of the Pope. Nevertheless, the bible is still considered the final authority among most Protestants.

As an ex mildly fundamentalist preacher I find the OP's idea close to the mark.
