Considering McGill Engineering next year... by ACommentFromBelowin mcgill

Pretty much everything moARRgan is saying is dead on.

That would probably be a better description, yeah. I think 'patriarchal' is certainly true, too, and 'hierarchical'.

I'll try to stick to that in the future then.

According to this view, there was no way Moses or Leviticus or any other OT author could have argued for same-sex marriage, and no way for them to think that maybe all gods were valid, and no way for them to think that women should have the same rights as men.

What about the belief that the Biblical authors were divinely inspired? A loving/caring/omnipotent/omnipresent God could have said, "Hey, cut that out. It's not cool to oppress anyone, including gay people."

It seems like your major point is that to be bigoted, someone needs to be faced with the opposing ideas. I'm not quite sure what the academic definition of bigotry is, so that could be. If it is, would replacing bigotry in the sentence, "The Bible is a book that contains bigotry" with "intolerance" be a more appropriate phrase?

The problem I have with labeling the Bible like this is that doing so ignores the fact that it was written under vastly different economic conditions to our own.

Doesn't that just put the bigotry in context? Ignoring the bigotry because the Bible was written in a different time seems silly. Especially when you have people applying the rules within to the modern world.

I don't need you to. "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them," is pretty specific in its bigotry. If you want to try to justify that, go for it.

Each of the words in cyrocite's post links to a different example.

And where exactly did I say that?

The bible is a giant metaphor.

Says you. Some people believe it's literal, and many believe it's some combination of the two.

I've read a large chunk of the Bible, attended a Catholic School, and taken classes through the Catholic Church. Dismissing my view that it's a hateful book as "exemplifying what's wrong with atheists on reddit" is pretty shitty.

I'm going to go ahead and encourage everyone to follow reddiquette. You shouldn't be downvoting posts based solely on disagreement with the opinion of the post.

I thought it would be received well because it's stuff you'd learn in college but I guess I was wrong.

Pfff, gender studies isn't REAL college. Only STEM majors understand what REAL college is.

Can we talk about the student strikes in Quebec? by slayeryouthin SRSCanada

[–]catchingExceptions 0 points1 point ago

I kinda just want to start some discussion beyond what's available in the Globe and Mail comments section.

/r/montreal has had some good posts on it. This is one redditor's view of the marches the past few nights. I'm sure the university subreddits have as well. /r/mcgill is pretty anti-strike, and that's really the only one I can speak for.

Women of SRS. We need to talk. by Redremnantin ShitRedditSays

I'm just not sure if I'm down for defining what it means to "be a man" for anyone but myself. Much less shaming those who don't fit my personal definition.

Isn't saying that just more enforcement of traditional gender roles?

Again, by saying that

It's more of a known risk that comes with the multitude of information you have access to.

you're putting the blame on the victim rather than the instigator. If you sit back and accept the shitty status quo, the Internet is going to stay racist, homophobic, transphobic, and misogynist. That shit isn't cool, especially when the space online is directly connected to a real-world location.

How can I trust your judgements? How can I know this isn't happening with legitimate comments that go against your view?

I can't recall if I mentioned it in this thread, but I believe in transparency of moderation through making my actions as visible as possible. If a comment is deleted, I state the reason.

Might SRS be harmful to their cause when it is misunderstood? by daturkelin SRSMeta

[–]catchingExceptions -2 points-1 points ago

Not sure why you're so irritated or cursing at me, I'm trying to have a discussion here.

Rules:

I. NO CONCERN TROLLING! Threads about how SRS hurts our cause or how we should be educating shitposters will probably earn you a ban. We've had that discussion too many times before and we're not interested in having it again.

That'd be why.

As long as you're not being discriminatory, you're not going to be censored by the mods. And I'd say downvoting all opposing opinons so much that the posters end up with post timers is more akin to censorship than getting rid of trolls.

I'm going to lump in:

i think its realistic to expect hostility and we should embrace it.

with an explanation of

Fuck. That. Noise.

Basically the "It's the Internet! People who feel discriminated against/get triggered knew the risk that they were taking!" is the laziest and most unhelpful argument that people make when it comes to behavior on the Internet. It's victim blaming, plain and simple. The onus shouldn't be on them to avoid the Internet because people are shitty on it, the onus should be on people to stop being shitty. "Embracing hostility" just gives the people being shitty free reign, and puts the blame with the people who are being discriminated against/being triggered/just aren't comfortable with discrimination. That shit isn't cool.

The community does far, far more censoring than the mods have. You of all people should know this. They downvote any minority or unpopular opinions hard.

If you're contributing to the discussion, you can do it without alienating groups of people. If you're engaging in personal attacks, you're in violation of the Rediquette and are actively creating a hostile environment.

and by going on the internet, everyone knows what risks they are taking.

Fuck. That. Noise.
