My (foreign) friend was attacked with a brick by a random Chinese man. The authorities did nothing? by fidelityin China

[–]bigrocco 1 point2 points ago

It seems until things cool off, most of us living here might want to pay attention while out in public. We've had a few recent attacks here but mostly related to drunken bar nonsense. So leave the headphones at home for now and go easy on the booze if out and about.

Litter=Job Creation...I don't want locals to change or improve their behavior. I'm just finally getting used to it and can navigate around it to lead a comfortable life...I have a little mantra that I use when I see stuff like this: "Job Security" It's this kind of selfish mentality that carries over in so much else in the way things "work" around here that I know my services will keep me in demand for as long as I can stick it out.

Children no problem but obvious jerks no thanks. Down south the pitch variation is word play on a homophone...in Cantonese sounds a bit like "hi lo" (Cunt Person)...so you know they are doing it to try and take the piss out of you. Depending on the mood, I might rush up to them start shaking their grubby hand and speaking like a car salesmen in fast English until they crawfish from losing face. 死人頭

Foreigners must carry passports and accommodation registration documents at all times. WTF really does that? by platypusmusicin China

[–]bigrocco 0 points1 point ago

I did for almost 5 years along with my FEC...up until it "disappeared" between the metro and work a few weeks ago (Haizhu GZ). Luckily it was my old expired one with my current visa. Then the school got a little weird about getting me a new FEC so I could get another visa (it was coming up due mid June and I wanted to leave at that time for summer holiday before the end of the term...you know the drill). So now I vow to only a carry a copy of both with scans on a micro SD. I'll renew the visa and reset the clock before I return hoping I can exit with all PSB paper work (police reports, registration, etc.) without too much headache or hassle. GZ SAFEA claims we qualify for a registration card on their web page but hell if I ever met an FEC holder here that managed to get one.

Not as much now as when I was younger. Often snapshots of scenes of places or situations I would encounter a few years later.

Thinking about spending 20-35 days in Thailand this summer. Would you recommend using a vacation package( like free n easy) or going on my own? by spreadittorin Thailand

[–]bigrocco 5 points6 points ago

It's your moral imperative as a Redditor to go on your own. Thailand is fairly easy to travel around with a little bit or research, common sense, basic English, money, a map, and a willingness to have fun. A few of my close friends from China have started to venture out on their own and have fallen in love with the freedom from group or packaged travel (There is a Free N Easy here in Southern China where I live not sure the same you mentioned). Be sure to read the links on the left.....have fun!

Just click on a few photos...to give you and idea what to expect. I think best advice is to wait until you get here and look around while staying in a hotel for a few days. Also factor in what's important for you, so even if you have a translator their understanding of foreigners maybe limited "why do you want a western toilet? They are bad for your healthy!" "Yes but that one building with the elevator is 25 RMB more a month!"

Good advice. Like most things here "open to negotiation". I just like looking at the pictures to get an idea of what a place might be like. As you can see furnishings do make the price higher. Just remember IKEA does deliver and really, what do you need to be comfortable for a short time? Don't think for a second that prospective renters don't try to cut the agent out of the middle.

Things to do / places to visit in Guangzhou? by joe1983joein China

Exactly. As long as you have your home address written down in Chinese you can always manage to get back home. Exploring the "little worlds" down the alleys sometimes will yield fantastic places for shopping, eating, drinking, and who knows!?!

Is 1500 RMB/month enough to live on if living arrangements are discounted? by notaserialkillerin China

[–]bigrocco 3 points4 points ago

Seems pretty spartan...indeed you'll need some side income but on the down low because of your visa. When and if you tutor suggest doing it over a meal or coffee (half trade half fee).
