"A top surrogate to Mitt Romney said making money -- rather than creating jobs -- was the primary goal of the presumed Republican Party presidential nominee when he was running Bain Capital LLC, saying he 'acted responsibly' as chief executive officer of the private-equity firm." by trot-trotin politics

[–]bfhurricane 0 points1 point ago

So a CEO made profit a priority? Shocker. What I don't understand is why everyone's jumping on Bain and not his time as governor. Wouldn't a good overview of his time as an executive in the position of governor be a tell tale sign of whether these Bain accusations hold any water as to how he'd act in politics?

Why are we (US) so worried about Iran with nuclear weapons? by gwigmigin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]bfhurricane 0 points1 point ago

In WWII, should the US have invaded Japan instead? I'm not arguing with you, I'm interested in what you think. Since then, the nuclear bomb has probably saved more lives through deterrence than it's killed.

And also there are elected officials in Iran but who knows how legitimate it is.

I'll tell you. Iran's Guardian Council approves candidates to run for office. After the president previous to Ahmadinejad (I forget his name off the top of my head, but he was a moderate pro-US fellow), the Council literally forbade about 2,000 similarly liberal candidates from even running.

And who appoints individuals to this elite council? The Supreme Leader (Khomeini). It's a pure theocracy with a very thin facade of democracy. It's like if the church in the US had to approve of every candidate before they ran for president. Imagine that.

But those are never your only two choices. You can still vote for another party or person. My argument is that eventually there will be enough transparency for people to see through the facade of "corporately sponsored" candidates. For example, do you consider yourself impacted by how much money a candidate has? Probably not, and neither do I. That pool of free minded individuals is growing.

My statistics teacher put a chart of payroll/wins over the past 20 years and we had to determine if the relationship was statistically significant. It's very correlative. Check back in another 40 or so games.

[–]bfhurricane 0 points1 point ago

I don't think Republicans couldn't care less about the poor or only want the rich to have benefits, but that's for another discussion. But yes, the founding fathers put the power of democracy in the hands of only those they thought had the qualifications to make informed decisions, being white male landowners.

I personally believe were progressively becoming a system where money is becoming marginally less effective in elections. As individuals are exposed to more sources of unfiltered news and educate themselves on the matters of politics, it becomes easier to look past the ad campaigns and lawn signs and judge the candidate truly based on their platform instead. Thus, the rich are going to have less of an impact in politics as the body of the governed becomes more self aware.

I do like it. But old SA is old SA, if we want to listen to it then we just need to click on it in our iPods. I'm welcome to new SA, even if it's not up to par with their old material. I thoroughly enjoy atleast 4 or 5 songs from each of their new albums that marks solid progression in a new direction

What would a breakdown of the US economy look like and how would it effect various other nations? by seeellayewhyin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]bfhurricane 1 point2 points ago

This is true. But the multiplier is less in the military industrial complex. If the government harnessed all our money and spent it on military equipment, that would be great for the military industrial complex, but that money wouldn't find its way as easily to other small businesses. If that money's dispersed throughout the population, it goes where people want it to go a lot more easily. That's a huge criticism of the USSR before their collapse.

I was a 49ers fan before moving to New Jersey. Someone got me a Giants jersey for my birthday to help me "acclimate," been a fan ever since. That's said, I'm thrilled Manningham and Jacobs ended up on the 49ers instead if any other team. I still get to root for them.

[–]bfhurricane 3 points4 points ago

Because the economy is intrinsically driven by what consumers want, not by what government wants. Also, the government can't invest in businesses the way individuals can. I'm not saying government can't efficiently spend money, but it's almost always better off in the hands of consumers. The economy and the market is simply a manifestation of what people want.

Ha, I could recommend just about their entire discography. You can't go wrong with Ecliptica, Silence, Winterheart's Guild, or Reckoning Night, I've gone through periods of obsession on all those albums. Some of my favorite songs: Fullmoon, 8th Commandment, San Sebastian, Abandonned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited, White Pearl, Black Oceans, Dethaura. White Pearl, Black Oceans is my favorite song by them, from the album Reckoning Night. I'd say start with that or Ecliptica.
