We all talk shit about Twilight. What are some historical examples of books that were criticized for literary quality but were still very popular with the general public? by elkresurgencein books

horatio alger wrote ~100 books that were all essentially the same, very popular, but not among critics.

Housing question from a fucking transplant. by aedgar777in columbia

[–]aschapm 2 points3 points ago

okay, $1000 a month within 10 or so minutes of walking distance from campus is a reasonable price to pay for a decent apartment with a roommate, by uptown manhattan standards, if you're in your mid 20s. unfortunately i really have no idea what you consider reasonable, big, nice, rich, safe, etc., so that might be twice or half as much as you were expecting. hard numbers like price, sq ft, or blocks/time from campus would help.

Buying my first coffee grinder. It's come down to Hario vs Krups! by meganappleseedin Coffee

[–]aschapm 1 point2 points ago

i have the hario you linked to. with a french press, it's just about perfect. takes less time to grind than to boil water, and grinding is a breeze. don't be put off by the lack of instructions, either; there're just four pieces that can only go together one way.

Restaurant suggestions in Midtown Manhattan? by oroku__sakiin nyc

[–]aschapm 2 points3 points ago

ma peche is a lovely asian fusion-y restaurant (part of the momofuku group here), unique to nyc, and would do the trick nicely. alternatively, marea is a fantastic primarily seafood italian restaurant. $250 at either for two people would get you food & wine, and you'd come away quite happy from both. also, both could be considered somewhat romantic.

This is how I clean up after a French Press. It takes a little longer, but it is waaaayyyyy easier. by theknowmadin Coffee

[–]aschapm 19 points20 points ago

while i agree that it looks like an easy way to clean up, i thought part of the reason of getting a french press was to stop buying coffee filters, no?

Elite Asian students cheat like mad on US college applications (x/post /r/engineering) by blueshiftlabsin TrueReddit

[–]aschapm 7 points8 points ago

i'm not sure why you think because your school had such harsh measures (i had a prof who had the same calculator rule) that his was "too lax". colleges like duke, middlebury, and other pretty elite schools will even give take home exams that expect students to conform to honor codes and not cheat. grade distributions bear this out, too; students take them seriously.
