In-app Subscriptions in Google Play by mandlarin androiddev

Regular in-app billing (not subscriptions) seems like a better fit for that. Unless you want them to make a recurring donation, like a once every month kind of thing.

I don't know what a warranty is for if it's not for replacing a defective or malfunctioning product. There appear to be other people who have the same phone and aren't experiencing this problem, so it sounds like a defect specific to your particular phone.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]adrianmonk 2 points3 points ago

It needs to be about results, not about theory. Rape is a complicated thing. At least in most cases, it's about power more than sexual desire. It seems self-evident that sexual desire and sex crimes are related. However, it's not obvious this drug actually reduces incidence of rape, so it should not be assumed that it does. For all I know, maybe it reduces desire by 75% but the remaining 25% is plenty strong enough to tempt someone to rape.

Assuming it works without testing it, just based on theory, is bad policy and bad science. Actually, it isn't science at all, because science would mean testing empirically.

In that case, go see an allergist (which will help with other allergies too, and usually there is more than one). And/or buy some Allerpet. Or learn to like dogs. (Come to the dark side!)

[–]adrianmonk -1 points0 points ago

Except if you prefer dogs and don't actually like cats that much. Then being allergic to cats is almost worth it. Yeah, there's physical suffering, but there's also a built-in out: "Honey, want to get a cat?" "You remember I'm allergic, right?" BOOM, off the hook.

I normally think the 27bslash6 guy is, despite being comedically gifted, kind of a jerk.

HOWEVER, in this case, I find myself asking... is there an address where I can send him money JUST IN CASE he needs it in pursuit of this matter? Because in 10 million years when all civilizations across the galaxy have finally managed to contact to each other and exchange wisdom, the one conclusive thing they'll find is that shining light into people's windows while they're trying to sleep is the one thing that every culture agrees is worthy of the death penalty.

I swear that the above is not at all influenced by the fact that when I was in high school, the people across the alley had a light that actually pointed upwards into my second-story window. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this even helps provide security to their (full fenced-in with a 9-foot fence) back yard in anything close to an optimal manner. I'm pretty sure it was just because they were evil.

Campus Gatti's Pizza closing after 40 years by doggodin Austin

[–]adrianmonk 5 points6 points ago

IMHO, it has really never been that good. I mean, it's Gatti's, after all.

On the OTHER hand, this place was a tradition. It was the kind of place you go as a college student because you can afford it (and you can't afford much else). For some, it was the kind of place you go because you can't afford 3 full meals a day, so instead you eat one truly massive, epic meal per day. Because it's a buffet.

It was cheap. It wasn't delicious. But it was pizza (and salad!), and it was fine, and they have televisions, and it was cheap enough to invite friends. What more could you want as a college student?

I wonder where college students are going to go now.

At least the bot helped us figure out there was a minor error: 74 kg doesn't really convert into 168.2 lbs.

The clue was that it started out 74 kg, changed into 168.2 lbs, and changed back into 76.3 kg, which isn't 74 kg.

Meet the $70 USB ‘Minority Report’ Device More Accurate Than Kinect and with Linux support!!! by kindrudekidin linux

Ha, I love my mobile phone, and Swype is impressive. But 25.94 seconds for 25 words (in "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human") is not exactly competitive with the fastest touch typists. It amounts to about 50 to 60 words per minute, depending on how you count it, which is like 1/4 the world record for touch typists (216 words per minute).

New Zealand smashes global child pornography ring by God_Wills_Itin worldnews

[–]adrianmonk 1 point2 points ago

Not true if those groups are open to new members. If someone can join the group, then no matter what encryption, etc. you use, an investigator can go undercover and join. Even if it's invitation only, an investigator can use social engineering to get an invitation. Investigators can and do pull off this sort of infiltration. They've done it with the mob, they've done it with terrorists, and they can do it with child molesters and child porn producers.

Of course they can't be 100% successful, but the claim was that no place is safe from (potentially) being tracked down, not that they are going to catch everybody.

map your movements onto a virtual mouse/keyboard/whatever

Yay, just want I wanted: no tactile feedback while trying to touch type. There's no possibility that my fingers will shift a centimeter to the left or the right and start registering the wrong keys or anything.

Not only that, but it seems like you could vary the hue and/or brightness of that monochromatic light over time in a controlled manner and thus distinguish your own light from other sources. However, that would probably slow down the rate at which you could sample the scene because you'd have to take several samples and compare them.

In some ways, that's a disadvantage. There's a certain psychological appeal to replacing the stock thingy with something better. You get a bit of a mental high knowing your computer is better because you knew to replace it with something that works better.

Internet Man Does Not Want To Be On The Google Anymore by twolf1in politics

One piece of data that I'm sad to discover... the guy's most recent post to twitter as of right now is this:

oncologist called michelles stage 4 cancer in remission. Thanked me for research and finding the chemo combo. #lovemy girl

So, I'm guessing a bit, but it sounds like his wife or daughter or somebody is about to die of cancer. That still doesn't excuse his comments at all, and he still needs to apologize, but if someone you love is dying of incurable stage 4 cancer, it could make you act like a dick to people sometimes.

In her defense, there have been a few global internet outages, with various causes:

  • In 2011, some important routers crashed after a bad software update from Juniper.
  • In 2009, a small ISP sent out some cruddy routing updates with autonomous system numbers repeated lots of times, and it caused major problems.
  • In 2003, the SQL slammer worm spread so fast it pretty much clogged up the internet.

Here's a list of some other outages.

So, while it's a ton less likely that an outage is global, that's a bit of a subtlety, and it's not an entirely ridiculous idea that everyone's internet might be out.

Bill Maher: Liberty University Is Not A Real School by btrflyin politics

[–]adrianmonk 1 point2 points ago

Some very good points there. I don't have any info about how bad Liberty actually is with that sort of thing (unless you're saying the problematic professor you had was at Liberty and you transferred or something?), but I could see how it could happen.

But at least the one thing you can say about it is that if you are halfway intelligent, it's the kind of failing you can predict. On the one hand, at least if you are dealing with someone who has that education, you know what to expect. On the other hand, that's not a lot of help for a student who may have been brought up in a very sheltered household and may not be informed enough to know to look for those issues. I guess the best you can say for it is that some people actually want that kind of "education", and they provide it.

BTW, good choice on St. Ed's over, say, Liberty. The education has got to be better, and even if it weren't, proximity to Home Slice would certainly be a selling point.
