New to town: should I get an EZ Tag or TxTag? by iliekmusikin houston

[–]Virindi 1 point2 points ago

I think it's pretty clear he wasn't trying to be racist. He was trying to essentially say "many people on reddit read/write english as their second or third language", so if you're taking offense to what they said, you need to take a break. The "white people" was an attempt to narrow the demographic. He could have taken it all the way if you'd prefer:

The reddit demographic doesn't just consist of english speaking, white, right-handed, 16-32 year old males that live in the USA, prefer RPG/FPS games, love Steam, hate Origin/EA, and spew sad memes and cat pictures for karma all day.

Wells Fargo Has Blood on Its Hands: Desperate Man Commits Suicide After Shocking Foreclosure Mistreatment - This is the story of what happens when an average couple is up against a giant, wealthy, powerful bank. by davidreiss666in politics

[–]Virindi 0 points1 point ago

I'm not impressed with your choice to blame the homeowner in this situation. There are people who buy more than they can afford, but there's absolutely no evidence this homeowner was one of them. They made every single payment on time. Read that again until it sinks in.

The evidence shows the bank manufactured documents, didn't return calls, fraudulently back-dated documents, set impossible deadlines for payoff, provided conflicting statements to the homeowner and his representative, lied to the customer, constantly gave them the runaround, refused to speak to the customer, refused to speak to the customer's representative (and made up reasons why), refused to accept payments, pretended not to receive documents, and never even admitted taking or mis-applying the payment that started the problem in the first place.

You say the homeowner got into a loan they couldn't afford, which is an incredibly stupid thing to say given the facts. I'm not angry - I just have very little patience for willful stupidity.

Yes, I'm currently in the US. I grew up in AUS though. I'm aware of the social differences, at least between the two countries.

Simply, it's not fair for an attacker to choose their method of abuse, yet not permit the victim to respond in a similar fashion. The aggressor should not be given more freedom than the abused. Letting one party choose violence, while simultaneously telling the victim they cannot or should not respond similarly is unjust. It's not about men and women to me, it's about fairness. The abused should be given the freedom to choose to do nothing, to respond in kind, or respond in some other way. I will not criticize, condemn, or otherwise look down on someone who chooses an equal and identical response to violence that is put upon them.

Note I am speaking about response to violence, and not initiation of violence.

I do dislike Comcast, if only because their contractors have lied to me, failed to perform work, and performed shoddy work for some of my customers. I've had to deal with the cleanup, and in almost all cases it culd have been avoided if they took minimal pride in their work. I'm sure other carriers have equally terrible contractors that are paid almost nothing and don't really care. I saw this picture, and "Comcast" was the first thing that popped into my mind ;)

I realize they didn't damage this.. ;) I am surprised that the customer didn't go out and buy some compression connectors and just splice it together properly for a few bucks. O.o

Everything I've said is valid. You took issue with his behavior while refusing to comment on hers. You called him a small man for his reaction, without even raising the fact that her action was equally inappropriate, never mind that she initiated the violence (however small). But if you still can't see that by your refusal to address her behavior you are perpetuating the stereotype that women are untouchable, weak, and not responsible for their actions, then there's not much else to say. Your view that violence by women should be condoned (or at least overlooked or ignored) was popular many decades ago. I'd like to believe that the world has progressed some since then, and that while we absolutely should respect women, we should also expect the same level of respect in return. Failure to respect those around you should have some consequence. I'm really sorry you don't understand that, but I can't distill it any further.

Like I said, he didn't seem angry when he slapped her back. And if that's what you consider a "wallop", I don't really know what to say. It was a slap. He took a minute to put his glasses back on and consider his response. He didn't knock her over nor leave a mark on her; there was no real force behind it. He did not yell at her. He did not have an angry expression on his face. Clearly his intent was to show her he did not consider her violence acceptable. I think he made that clear with minimal impact. IMHO, giving her an arrest record would be going too far, and she may not be able to afford a fine, the jailtime associated with assault (on a police officer no less), or the possible loss of her job if she's suddenly gone for a week serving her sentence.

By making the comment that small things make small men angry, but saying absolutely nothing about her initiating violence, you're implicitly condoning her behavior. You chose to judge his actions but not hers. I don't feel like that's a very complicated concept to understand.

Whatever. I love my wife, but she knows I have enough respect for myself that I would never let her hit me. YMMV. I don't consider hitting people to express yourself an acceptable adult behavior, and I won't put up with it. Conversely, I have enough respect for her (and women in general) that I would never initiate violence against a woman. I will defend someone (man or woman) being attacked (by a man or woman) if it's clearly a one sided fight and they're just trying to get away from violence. I think that's a fair stance, and it doesn't perpetuate the archaic stereotype that women are weak creatures that can hit people with absolutely no consequence.

He didn't seem angry to me. He seemed like he was meting out punishment in response to her violence. It wasn't worthy of an arrest, but it was worthy of a response, and his response sure seemed restrained to me. I didn't see a baton, handcuffs, a takedown, or punches. He didn't yell. He simply slapped her back.

Thanks for perpetuating the stereotype that it's ok for a woman to hit a man. It's not ok for women or men to hit each other. Some women get away with it for so long that they believe there is no consequence for their violence. Whether or not they can hit as hard as a man doesn't matter. It's not acceptable behavior from either sex.

Stop white knighting. He didn't hit her, yet she felt it was appropriate to slap him (police officer or not). She's probably gotten away with slapping and hitting people all her life because those around her say "eh, she's just a woman."

The customer shouldn't touch it because the top-quality Comcast installation (pictured) probably used high-voltage wire for support.

I've seen so many piss-poor (Comcast contractor) installation jobs. Yeah, I realize the customer did this one, but if you had asked me "did the customer do this, or did the installer do it?" I'd have to think about it. To be fair, the actual Comcast employees are ok (you know, the ones they send out after the contractor screws everything up).

How many of you have paid for your meal at a wedding? My gf and I are expected to pay $80-100 each for our meals at an upcoming wedding, the bride says its an "unspoken tradition" by bootsmegamixin AskReddit

[–]Virindi 0 points1 point ago

It's not an unspoken tradition, they're just being really cheap. I've been to probably 10 weddings in my life and nobody ever asked me to pay for the meal. The "unspoken tradition" is for you to bring a gift for the bride/groom.. but not to pay for your meal or any of the festivities. That's just crazy.

1. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of a problem

2. Exit the freeway immediately, if at all possible.

3. Pull over to the shoulder if you can't get off the freeway

4. If you are not in a safe place, stay in your car and call for a tow/assistance

5. If you are in a safe place, get out of your car and fix the issue.

Looks like they skipped a few steps. Oops.

but I vaguely remember a professors statement that they were put into those camps because they refused to sign a paper to become citizens [...]

Uh, he's talking out of his ass. They rounded up Japanese people who were already citizens. Start with the Wikipedia article; around 62% of those rounded up were citizens. They were simply Japanese.

[...] Japanese-American internment was the relocation and internment by the United States government in 1942 of about 110,000 Japanese Americans [...] The U.S. government eventually disbursed more than $1.6 billion in reparations to Japanese Americans who had been interned and their heirs.

The price for their lost rights, freedom, job, and any semblance of a life during that time (according to the government): only $14,545 per person

Also: During World War II, Colorado governor Ralph Lawrence Carr was the only elected official to publicly apologize for the internment of American citizens. The act cost him reelection.
