LL Bean Canvas Hiking Shoe. Yay or nay? by dean939in malefashionadvice
[–]Unidan 2 points3 points4 points 11 hours ago
Unfortunately, style and substance don't often go hand in hand for hiking. There are some good ones that meet in the middle.
Some of the older Timberlands are actually decent and I currently use some Merrils and Lowa boots, too, but they're a far, far cry away from anything fashionable.
For anything in a wetland or near waterlogged soils, I actually just wear gigantic rubber boots which would probably get me crucified here, but they work.
A lot of the fabric that you want depends on what you're doing. Everyone loves Gore-Tex, but if you're looking for a breatheable shoe, you're in for a nasty surprise. Yeah, it's waterproof, but it's also somewhat resistant to water leaving the shoe, too. Top out in waterproof boots and you're wearing water buckets suddenly.
I've actually seen this boot in action a couple of times on some of my sexagenarian professors. In my opinion, it's a pretty fashionable boot and is classic hiking design, historically. Should last you if you're doing some general trail hiking and keep it nice and maintained. Leather boots can last you forever.

Yes, I'm well aware of the man who tarnished my once good name.
I preceded that "Unidan" on the internet by many years.
WHY WASNT HE ON THOSE PYLONS
Yup. Many legumes have root nodules which house nitrogen fixing bacteria! These convert atmospheric nitrogen to a form that is usable by other bacteria to convert to a form usable by plants.

It'd probably be all garlicky.

I don't have much to say in terms of fashion, but I'm a field ecologist and I'll tell you right now that those shoes probably won't last you on any real hike.
The ankle looks pretty flimsy and the laces don't look like they'd hold up well.
Might be alright for dry weather walking or light hiking, but if they get wet at all, you'll be pretty sad about it. Seems very plastic-y and not too insulated at all, so I'd be wary.
I imagined you just reaching your hands into a cup of melted butter and syrup and grabbing it like it was a solid sandwich.

Mix it with carboniferous material. The earth worms need something to eat, they can't eat pure acid.
The worms will break down carbon material and help to create humus (their castings/droppings are good for this), you don't need them to create nitrogen. They'll help to prepare the soil structure and modify existing nutrient substrate.
Be careful of what kind of worms you have in the area, too. Remember that some worms are not good for your garden! Some Asian varieties will simply destroy leaf litter layers and mess up your soil.
That said, chicken manure is really good stuff. It adds ridiculous amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to soils, much more so than other types of manures because it is concentrated by volume in comparison to horse or cow manure.

One of my professors, during a class on maternal bonding in humans, once told me that he had been in a couple of relationships over his lifetime and that he learned something.
He told me that if you are in a relationship that is similar to a mother and child, that is, one that is dependent on the other, it simply will eventually fail. He told me to seek out a relationship where you have two independent people who share in each other's lives.
Then he vividly described the time he watched his wife breastfeed his first child to the class.
It...got a little weird, but I think I got the message.

Coconuts are great.
Ate a ton of wild ones in Costa Rica, mainly for a little water. The liquid inside is apparently sterile enough that you can actually use it for IV fluid.
What they don't tell you is that if you decide to climb up a palm to get coconuts, don't look up into the tree as you swing your machete to cut the coconuts down. The leaves dry up there and it will rain debris into your precious eyes.
I learned this the hard way D:
I am an ecologist! Just more specifically in the field of nitrogen biogeochemistry.
And I do teach, just not a full professor. I taught an introductory biology class this last semester and an environmental course the semester before that. I'm hoping to actually teach my specialty of ecology soon!
Oh definitely, I rarely paid for anything as a buddy of my family ran the shop. I'd just pay for the fish, usually, that or live rock.
In that case, I have literally nothing to offer you.
