Imagine there is a race of beings that far exceeds humans in intelligence. Would it be ethically right for them to use us for food as we use 'Lesser' animals for food? by Varo112in philosophy

If they're that intelligent they will have undoubtedly dispensed with the primitive notion of morals.

Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is by Tringardin Foodforthought

[–]Ubersmush 4 points5 points ago

I thought it was an interesting article with a fun analogy, but why is the point system seen as separate from the difficulty level?

The article said that you might be playing with less points than anyone else (ie abusive upbringing, poor family) but you are still on easy mode. Are poor/badly bought up white people really playing on an easier difficulty level (which I took to mean more opportunity) than rich/well bought up minorities?

I would argue that access to life's opportunities are more complicated than the false dichotomy of white/minorities.

Now I would agree with the article if it had reasoned all points being equal white males have an easier time gaining opportunity in the mmo of life than minorities. But the author's reasoning seems a tad twisted to me.

Witty sayings might not prove anything but that is because they are unfalsifiable! True sayings must have room for refutation within them

Your reply seems to be a zealous rebuttal of an unmade point.

well judging from your reply, everyone on reddit takes flippant comments seriously enough to warrant a rebuttal.

In the Jungle, the story of "a Zulu who wrote a melody that earned untold millions for white men but died so poor that his widow couldn’t afford a stone for his grave" by liyiyanin Foodforthought

the tale of an author who made thousands from the story of a Zulu who wrote a melody that earned untold millions for white men but died so poor that his widow couldn't afford a stone for his grave who earned enough to retire while leisurely having the time to tell everyone what an exaggeration the AIDS statistics in Africa really are.

A Slow-Books Manifesto: Read books. As often as you can. Mostly classics. by phileconomicusin Foodforthought

I spelled her name incorrectly to imply just how uneducated I am!!!

Criteria is an interesting idea but I would think it does purely come down to individual taste which is always uncertain. Whilst I found wuthering heights to be a bland read, devoid of any inherent worth I wouldn't be surprised that others were deeply affected by Bronte's harsh entrenchment to reality in the same that Heller or Vonnegut's refuge in the absurd affected me.

Is there any authority when judging literature apart from the authority of the personal? Maybe there there is no value in reading great literature except the value of reading literature at all? According to this article

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-neuroscience-of-your-brain-on-fiction.html?_r=3

fiction exercises your social skills and your empathy, is this the only purpose to read then? Can some authors exercise it in better ways? Does reading Joyce over James actually make you a better person? If so this would be an excellent criteria.

What a fantastic idea! Must do this in my summer break! Think I'll be choosing some shorter books though.

I'm not really sure what the message is meant to be in that text? That teachers don't teach adequate methods to deal with bullying?

Life and death are just human constructs. Celebration is a meaningless ritual and this question is redundant!

Having a difficult time breaking through this existential crisis, and beginning to wonder if I am seriously depressed. by awaywethrow1982in philosophy

[–]Ubersmush 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like you have clinical depression. Especially if you are finding it hard to enjoy anything in your life. That is a major red flag. See a GP/Counsellor.
