The New York Times: Quebec is trampling basic human rights to quash student protests by b90ZEin canada

[–]Tweeeked 0 points1 point ago

As a Montrealer, I would like to say that none of my rights have been taken away by protestors.

The number has now changed to 518. However, when I submitted the article it was estimated 400.

Do you have a source on NDP not meeting with constituents in Quebec? I've heard/read quite the opposite, in which new/young dippers are doing an excellent job getting involved in their constituencies (i.e. Brosseau 1, 2 & Borg).

Which is caused by a corrupt government, which is what many people are protesting! It goes full circle!

Is it just me or do english students just not care about the strike? by skatingdarkin montreal

I'm from BC and I go to McGill and I see a lot of Anglo posts about the protests. I run with a pretty political circle of friends, though.

Terrasse du Bar ST-BOCK attaquée par des policiers (vidéo) by [deleted]in montreal

It's crazy. I live on the corner of Sherbrooke and St-Denis and go to St-Bock all the time. Tonight, we decided to go to Laika for a change. I really hope St-Bocks presses charges.

That is true. No human can handle excessive stress. The knee-jerk reaction of "send in the troops" will take its toll both in terms of cost and long-term stress/mental issues for all parties.

However, the police also have a very powerful political voice, which is very rarely used. They seem to accept their government goon positions, whereas they are meant to be protectors and enforcers of society at large.

Cops are trained and paid to stay calm in these situations. There is never an excuse for an armed and armoured police officer to react like that in this situation.

Artists' Lofts in Montreal? by laughingsutrain montreal

[–]Tweeeked 1 point2 points ago

I think it really depends on your work. If you have a steady enough business then you could probably rent a work place and live nearby. There is one building (the name is slipping me now) that is work lofts of varying sizes in order to accommodate a variety of artists (i.e. some are very small for painting, others are split level for fashion). That building is work only, but there are a number that are live/work that are completely legal.

In any event, I think the loft scene will only increase as more warehouses become available.

Good Cheap Haircut For Men (Straight hair) by mtlmanhairin montreal

[–]Tweeeked 0 points1 point ago

I know this post is a couple days old now, but I searched it out and I will assume others will as well.

I just went to Andies because of this recommendation and it was great. Quickest haircut I've ever had, while still remaining accurate. $15 including taxes (not including tip) for a student is a great deal. Back in BC I paid $40 for the same type of haircut. I would definitely recommend Andies.

What specifically would you like to know? I know there are a lot of warehouses that have been converted to live/work or just work spaces in the Plateau/Mile End. I'm completely blanking on the names of some of the buildings though.

I read somewhere that there is (in terms of official breeds) no such thing as a miniature or toy Aussie. Either way, gorgeous dog. It's nice to see some love for dogs on Reddit.

I feel like you didn't read my posts...at all.

I am 100% against trophy hunting, but 100% in favour of hunting for food

So I am completely ok with fishing and even hunting deer, moose, rabbits, etc (i.e. cute fuzzy animals) for food.

For me, it's a question of why he was hunting...So right now, I am on the fence.

I clearly indicated I didn't have enough information on Booth's purpose, and therefore did not take a stance on this specific hunt.

You may. There are a number of reasons for me. First, it's a waste of a life for no real reason. Sure, one may have fun doing it, but I bet there are a ton of other things one enjoys doing that don't require killing an animal. Second, it is undoing thousands of years of natural selection. The biggest and strongest animals are the ones that hunters try to take down, yet these are traits that are desired in a mate. In the end the species has the weakest gene pool possible, which does terrible things for future generations. Finally, and this relates more to animals at the top of the food chain, it can completely upset the balance of entire ecosystems through explosions of populations on the lower side of the food chain.

Now I know licenses are meant to control the number of animals hunted for trophy, but there are so many more that are hit by cars, have habitat destroyed through urban development, and are hunted without license. Additionally, I don't think any government knows the exact population level that needs to be maintained before a species collapses, so I don't trust them in even distributing licenses.

And yes, it does have an effect on people's lives. I don't believe I am in this world to live my life selfishly and then die. I like to think I am here to make a positive difference in the world. So for me the risk of destroying a species outweighs the desire for some people to kill an animal, take a picture, and hang its head on the wall.

I like the capitalization of "Jets". It creates an image of hockey players advancing on a group of protesters like riot cops do (i.e. full gear hockey players walking down the street slamming their sticks onto their helmets, similar to riot cops slamming their batons on their shields).
