Hey r/TinyHouses, What is considered a Tiny House? by peteyboy100in TinyHouses

[–]TrickyWidget 0 points1 point ago

From a legal perspective, a portable tiny house is probably one that is 400 square feet or less. This allows it to be considered an RV and exempt from laws and taxes that might be applied to a mobile home.

(I've seen the 400 sq ft figure cited a few places, but none of them are authoritative. Can anyone confirm that?)

I think another aspect of tiny houses is they embody the idea that most of life happens out in the world. Houses shouldn't be luxurious to the point that you could spend days on end inside them without feeling like you're missing out on anything. Tiny houses are just enough to be what a house really needs to be, and then frees up the rest of your space and time to be out living the rest of your life.

(Which is not to imply that tiny houses are uncomfortable. A well-designed tiny house should be a lovely place to spend a rainy afternoon. They just don't invite you to forget what's beyond the couch!)

Anyone know a born energy worker/spiritual healer in this area? by TrickyWidgetin asheville

[–]TrickyWidget[S] -1 points0 points ago

Which is not to say that I'm looking for freebies. I just don't want a "healer" who charges $100/hour and has never heard of a sliding scale. Anyone genuine won't be too concerned with money beyond what allows them a modest lifestyle.

"Talking about music is like..." -Steve Martin [1600x900] by drednaughtin QuotesPorn

[–]TrickyWidget 5 points6 points ago

In the event that you're actually sincere about that...

The point of the quote is that there are things which can't be captured in word or thought; they can only be found in experience. The quote is not insisting that no one should talk about music (nor even not dance about architecture), but rather that if one only talks about it then they do not truly understand it. The heart, the essence of the thing lies outside the domain of language and cognition.

Small house(s) question! by jaxnmarkoin TinyHouses

[–]TrickyWidget 4 points5 points ago

In my research, most sources say the "too small for code" notion is largely a myth. You may find some areas with something like that, but it seems that most places have code for any type of inhabitable permanent structure, regardless of the size. (I suspect the key to the myth is "inhabitable". Almost everywhere has code that applies to living spaces that don't apply to sheds or garages.) The only ways I've found to reliably get around code is to make your structure temporary (like a tent or yurt) or portable (like an RV or most tiny houses).

Can anyone tell me about Asheville's Zen Center? by Fukurokujuin asheville

[–]TrickyWidget 2 points3 points ago

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the Asheville Zen Center, but it's awesome to hear about somebody finding Alan Watts. He's really astonishing and sadly under-appreciated these days. He was one of the major figures in the early days of me moving away from hard-core empiricism and towards a much broader perspective on what is. I count him among the wisest modern voices in the West.

I wish you the very best on your journey!

An old Cherokee told his grandson... by No1005in quotes

Certainly not because I doubt quality sentiments could come from a Native American. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I've tracked down dozens of quotes over the years, in particular these sorts of inspirational ones. When I use them I like to make sure I'm both giving due credit and not being sloppy by citing an incorrect source. And I have found, almost without exception, that any feel-good quote popularly attributed to a Native American turns out to be incorrect. And as I've looked into them them all, I've come to recognize the sort of popcorn, New-Agey pseuso-wisdom that is typical of these misattributed passages. And this "two wolves" piece feels like exactly that sort of thing. (Though I confess I haven't actually tracked this particular one down.)

New Age Frauds & Plastic Shamans is a great resource for verifying these. They're primarily oriented around exposing non-natives charging money for purported Native American teachings or healing, but the forums are good for tracking down quotes, as well.

All of that said, my problem is with the attribution, not the sentiment. As I said, I like the idea behind it. (Though I think Magnora's response probably has more insight.)

TL;DR - Actual Native American wisdom is better than this.

I'm pretty sure this was penned in the last few decades and not by any sort of Native American, but it is a very cool notion.

Just FYI, redditors of Asheville...DON'T RENT FROM THESE GUYS. Their BBB rating is misleading, they delete comments, and are generally nothing but sleazy slumlords. by cheml0vinin asheville

[–]TrickyWidget 3 points4 points ago

I have to agree. Large rental outfits are not in the business of providing people with a quality housing experience. They're in the business of making maximum profit from minimum effort and they generally regard tenants as liabilities, not customers. You'll almost always have a better time dealing with private individuals.
