So it's ok for the FCC to censor boob slips/nudity/profanity on network television but not OK for them to censor lying? I don't think news agencies submit a request every time they want to let the anchor curse on the air. It just kinda happens sometimes and they get fined after the incident.

The fact that the government doesn't run on reason is partially due to the fact that nonsense and conjecture (like denying global warming) is given equal footing with scientific fact. If news agencies repeat a falsehood (like the president being muslim) enough times, it becomes indistinguishable from fact for people who do not diversify their news intake. This results in a consensus based on a lie and is ultimately destructive to our democracy.

I know you can say people can just tune out the bullshit, but the problem is that many people assume that the bullshit is true and can't pick out what is fact from what is fiction...

I remember the fiasco with the guy who wrote "Million little pieces" because he sold his book as nonfiction even though he made up a large part of the book. Why isn't there a similar fiasco every time a new agency blatantly lies and calls it nonfiction.

I'm in favor of restricting lying on the news. People should have unlimited speech. But reporters/scientists (people who we get trusted information from) should be held to a higher standard and should not be legally allowed to deliberately mislead people. Should they go to jail? No. Should a news organization be fined every time it is caught in a lie? Yep, and they should be required to correct the lie on another broadcast if it is discovered.

It's not pro "restricting speech" that is too global. It's like saying that because Obama supports gay people being allowed to get married that he declared a war on marriage and religion.

Just because I want news organizations to stop deliberately lying (all official news organizations on network TV, regulated by the FCC) does not mean that I want to declare a war on free speech and want everybody censored for dropping the F bomb.

So I guess the answer is NO. I am not in favor in restricting speech globally and having people allow profanity to be censored or having rap music censored. But in a "democratic" society being informed is very important. I would like to see your argument against a radio and news integrity law that isn't "Well that's a slippery slope because next they'll ban all political speech and we will become communist." Because that is bullshit. In that case it is logical to argue that any new law is a "slippery slope" to something horrible and scary. Like legalizing gay marriage is a "slippery slope" to bestiality.

Who is their? I never specified who I was talking about. The law would apply to all news organizations. Fox and MSNBC alike. Since when is holding news sources accountable to the truth, a controversial liberal idea?

"Once we have computer outlets in every home, each of them hooked up to enormous libraries where anyone can ask any question and be given answers, be given reference materials, be something you’re interested in knowing..." ~ Isaac Asimov, 1988 by cilantroavocadoin videos

[–]Tememachine 2 points3 points ago

As Asimov himself states in the interview (later part 2 or 3) the real goal of human intelligence is our propensity toward creativity. Obviously you can't truly be creative unless you have some learning under your belt. But tasks of rote memorization and mechanistic performance of procedural skill are indeed becoming outdated as you have pointed out in you comment. (I'm not saying that it isn't necessary to be a good piano player to play Jazz, I'm saying more-so you don't need to waste your time memorizing phone numbers/directions anymore) Joshua Foer, in his book "Walking with Einstein" explains how the ancient Greeks used the "Memory Palace" as a mental map to memorize vast amounts of information. Is this interesting? Yes. Useful? Yes, but to a degree...

Fact is, since we can now export our memory of minutiae factoids means that we are able to evolve our thinking into a process that is more concerned with synthesis than storage. Will I still have to remember a lot of facts to be able to do that? Sure. But the internet makes retrieving those fact a helluva lot easier. In my vocation, since everything is changing so fast, memorization of anything but the most fundamental concepts is somewhat useless because things change every couple of years. Even the fundamental concepts change.

I don't have a study to point to and this is all my personal conjecture.

I look at true intelligence not as memorization prowess or being able to do a very specific task, but as being able to do many things well. More like Leonardo Da Vinci and less like a savant. When machines become even more advanced, human beings will become obsolete outside of the realms of creativity IMO (Asimov says this also in later parts of the interview.) Some people like Susan Blackmore disagree.

A test from the 1950's wouldn't be relevant today. Kids back then were probably better at long multiplication, but kids today are probably better at abstract reasoning and logic.

TLDR: My opinion is that a being a well rounded and creative "Renaissance Man" is true intelligence and that the internet simply makes that goal more achievable to the masses. The Leonardo's and Newtons won't be as rare as they once were. However laziness seems to be the most universal human trait. Thus this access to information will only benefit those that have the itch to learn more.

I see your point though. Back then we lost more good men to drink and wars. Maybe today there is a farmville and Playstation plague. I don't really think this kind of stuff is really measurable though. I guess history will tell.

Why don't you think free speech can have very specific restrictions? Threat of imminent violence is already considered outside the bounds of free speech.

I don't know why you got downvoted. The constitution was not meant as some sacred document passed down by gods. Clearly; lying on "official" news sources, the legalization of propoganda from the government, and hate speech are all problems that need to be addressed RIGHT NOW. I disagree about religion though that shouldn't be touched because who are you to tell people that what they believe is silly. The only time it becomes an issue is when they expect to be allowed to persecute others in the name of their beliefs. Go live in your cult in the woods, but if you start talking about putting other people in electric fences for not believing in your version of "the truth" THEN we have a problem. Why can't these extremists just live like the Amish if they're so damn holy. I think the main problem is that these people literally believe that the entire nation is their community and that they own this country and as such are able to dictate its laws. Well, newsflash...America has changed dramatically in the last century.

You know how gays aren't allowed to step foot in some churces? Well why should creationists and anti-science advocates be allowed in hospitals?

Not true. Although my generation may have a lot of dumb people, I'd bet that the smart ones are utilizing these tools more than you would think. Today a good medical student is required to know at least 75% more information than a good medical student 50 years ago. A good engineer is hundreds of times more productive. The pace of research has increased exponentially since the advent of the internet. You think all of these people are not in the internet savvy generation? Get real. I know a 25 year old nanoscientist with a PhD who teaches in Albany. Is he a genius? No. He's just a normal, talented kid who really likes physics. Would he be able to become proficient enough in his field that fast, without access to specialized information via the internet? No way!

People aren't any smarter or dumber than they used to be. However, this new tool is allowing those with an appetite for information to be so much more efficient with their time. Stick around for a while gramps, the internet generation is bound to deliver.

I'm not familiar with the Srebrenica massacre...

Obviously park 51 is neither a mosque nor was it meant as an insult to the victims. However in my opinion, choosing a different location would have been less controversial. To me it's as if we sent missionaries to build catholic schools in Afghanistan. Sure it's a nice gesture because we are providing education to the people, but the local people would definitely see this gesture as misguided and react negatively. When they were planning on where to build Park51 they should have considered the PR difficulties that would ensue with the symbolic location they chose.

I'm all for freedom of religion, but I also believe that 9/11 is a special situation that needs to be treated with a certain sensitivity. It would be better if the donors to this center chipped in for the memorial and built a monument denouncing extremism. Rather than building a community center that promotes interfaith communication but that is also equipped with a prayer room. I understand why they built it (purportedly to promote the fact that not all muslims are extreme <obviously>) but disagree with where they chose to do it. Is it wrong and an 'overt act of aggression'? NO. Is it extremely politically incorrect and insensitive? Yes, IMHO.

EDIT: Here's a better example. During WWII there was a German group of intellectuals called The White Rose that were very anti-Nazi. Should these people who were against Hitler be memorialized/remembered/revered by Germans? Absolutely. Would it be appropriate to make a memorial for them at Auschwitz? Probably not, because it would take the focus away from 'the victims' and put the focus onto the fact that there were good people within the group of bad people.

Should there be interfaith centers in New York that promote dialogue and understanding of muslims and reinforce the idea that 90% muslims are really nice people? ABSOLUTELY...

Should there be building built in the name of reparation that doesn't focus on the victims on the site of the tragedy? Nope.

To me, It's kinda (loosely) like if your friend does something bad to you and instead of saying something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, I was wrong and I'll do everything I can to make sure it wont happened again..." He instead goes, "I'm sorry, I realize I have made you upset, but you have to realize that I wouldn't normally do this and this is a big misunderstanding. But you have to understand that what you did last week really made me upset and that I wasn't thinking and overreacted....blah blah blah"

Although an explanation and analysis of the problem would be the more logical, sometimes people who are hurt are less satisfied with intellectualization than they are with sincerity and symbolism. Although, intellectually I understand the motives behind this center, viscerally and emotionally I am uncomfortable with it once I am reminded of the events of that day. It just doesn't sit well with my gut, what can I say. Instead of building a 'community center' with a prayer room to "give back" to the people of NYC. They should've built a memorial park with no religious connotation, simply and uncontroversially dedicated to the city and the victims not to "interfaith understanding".

Am I making any sense?

I was in 8th grade when this happened. I remember my math teacher was called out into the hallway and immediately upon returning switched on the tv. When the image of the burning buildings came on, he threw the remote at the blackboard so hard that it exploded. Then he sat down at his desk with his arms on his forehead for what seemed like hours but was only a few minutes. He just said, "We are at war, this is going to determine the course of the rest of your lives." Many kids in my school had people working in the WTC and in surrounding areas. Miraculously only a relative few had lost their parents that day. I remember thinking the whole time that it was a dream and that it couldn't actually be happening. My mom kept freaking out for a whole week or two telling my dad that we needed to move to Australia because nothing like this ever happens there. I remember being glued to the TV for days and then my mom just telling me to go play videogames and stop watching the news, it actually helped. I played some CS an kept choosing the CT side.

One of the most surreal days of my life.

Looking back at those times, I actually regret some more liberal positions I've taken in the past (like on the building of the 'community center' near the wtc). I don't have a problem with muslim people in general. But no extremism or violent rhetoric should be tolerated.

Man I remember when this first came out, I had just learned how to use virtual DJ and was a total n00b. I mashed some songs together: many of these with Bloody Beetroots, mstrkrft, yelle, Aoki, Toxic Avenger, etc and put them in a mix with decent fading and crossovers, but not much "skill" other than that. Got me my first DJ gig at college for like 50$ an hour and free drinks! I think I got the job since people had never heard real electrohouse before and I was like the only person to sample this stuff. Then about a year or two later it exploded and now the scene is taken over by bro-step. Thank god I'm not in college for that mess.
