Can i have some advice? :) by findingithardin loseit

Would you be able to post a picture. Sounds like you've got a bit of extra fat and your focus should be there first. A strong core will come from situps, leg raises, plank, squat, etc.

I'd suggest introducing them to the Jamie Oliver food revolution series. Jamie Oliver is a British chef and tv personality and he did a series here in the UK about improving school lunches. He later took the same series over to the US.

Main thing I learned -> get the lunch ladies on your side.

You could decant the water into another pitcher through a strainer. Personally tho I just leave it for 30 seconds before I start drinking and then leave them in. The time allows the mint/cucumber to brew, like a cup of tea.

Cycling, swimming would both have the same effect. You need to up your heart rate for a bit to try stimulate your appetite.

Typical Day for Me - Review? [HELP] by 1137in loseit

Ok, so personally... I wouldn't fret. You're 31 - as someone in a similar age bracket it might just take a bit longer to get yourself burning at top speed again. If you're really keen there are definitely things you could do to accelerate the process but if what you're doing works long term (check in after 30 days) , then I'd just keep at it. You've got another 60 years - may as well enjoy it.

That said, if you want advice on ramping things up, I can definitely provide some.

I'm not really a calorie counter - except when I'm trying to gain, but if you're not having success I think it's worth while. I'd say that in terms of effectiveness and importance the following precedence applies: macro-nutrients, then calories, then frequency/timing.

Home made banana chips are awesome. Kudos to that. Colour me impressed.

High fats are good, but I'm of the opinion that all real food should rot and nature valley bars last for 12 years +. If you're feeling hungry grab an avocado, squeeze of lime and some black pepper. It's awesome.

The powerade isn't the worst thing in the world, but I've just never seen any benefit from them. No athlete I know drinks them.

You didn't mention the exercise?

Thanks freudenschaden

On the whole that's a pretty good diet. I'd say swap out some of the pork/beef for whiter meats (chicken/turkey/fish).

Personally the only cheese I'd have in my diet is low fat cottage. You can lose weight and eat cheese. But if you're struggling cut back to basics.

I'd also swap the processed stuff out for more 'back to basic' stuff. How would you feel about Oats instead of Cheerios? What about having a ham omelette instead of the sandwich?

Couscous is a good option, but I'd cut the cheese and suggest trying quinoa. It's an ancient grain that's really high in protein. Also is this a premade pack? If so, you can have the same at a fraction of the cost and it will be easy + healthy. Let me know if you're interested.

Exercise-wise: I'd try one gym class a week. Right now you might not have the right idea of what 'intense' actually feels like. But you need to push yourself into that zone if you want to see real change.

Hope this helps?

check your post! some suggestions abound

Typical Day for Me - Review? [HELP] by 1137in loseit

[–]ReginaldCartwright 2 points3 points ago

How old are you?

Some suggestions off the bat: Swap out the following:

  1. Pepperoni, it's mainly sat fat - grab some lean jerky instead

  2. Bagel Thins/Banna chips - avoid anything overly processed - grab some a handful of unsalted almonds instead.

  3. Nature valley bar - check out the fat:protein:carb ratio on this. It's too high on the fats. Swap in a lower fat (particularly trans and saturated fats). Or preferably swap it out entirely for 'real food'.

  4. Powerade - these aren't the worst things in the world, but they often have high sodium content and are full of junk. Swap out for water.

  5. Cheese string - maybe swap out for some low fat cottage cheese (combine with apple/almonds and honey - delicious!)

Increase your intensity. Kickboxing is great. I'd swap the walking out for a 15 minutes interval training.

1) Is this recent? 2) Are you doing any exercise?

My advice - head out for a quick 20 minute jog and see if that has any effect.

Can you post an example of what you're eating in a day? Personally I'm not a fan of calorie counting (I go the macro nutrient route - Proteins vs Fats vs Carbs). I'd be happy to give an alternate pov.

You say you know what you're doing, but just a quick caveat. What you've learned in the military (particularly in regards to diet) could be wrong. I'd be humble/open minded and assume you don't know best. You've got some good ideas, but there are others out there that might have a better suggestion.

That said, don't focus on the long term. Don't see this as "I've got to fix my entire diet". We don't even know what that journey looks like for you. Are you going to end up loving long distance steady state runs (high complex carbs diet), smashing short intense HIIT sessions (eat a blend of 40/40 carbs and protein) or go for some size with complex lifts (60% protein focus). Who knows?

So don't worry about the big picture. Your job is two fold. You can choose a healthier option, or what you had last time, but you can't go for a less healthy option. That's it. Simply don't take a single step back. Let go of the guilt and you'll start slowly improving things.

Good luck.

Take 1 cucumber. Cut it in half. Cut that half into bits (strips or circles - both rock). Place in large pitcher. Take a pinch of fresh mint. Place in palm of hand and commence 'thunder clap'. Add to picther. Add water. Leave for about 30 seconds.

Drink and bask in awe of hot yoga-type girls wanting to be your friend.

Part of the problem is that George Clooney isn't filling those seats anymore. The studios are in a downward spiral of needing to make money so they place safe bets which don't come through at the required ROI.

Personally, I didn't use my dvd's as regularly as I thought I would and their streaming selection wasn't great (although it was growing). If you watch a lot of DVDs it could work out well.

My advice - sign up for a 30 day free trial and see what happens?

So What are your New Years resolutions? by ReginaldCartwrightin ZenHabits

[–]ReginaldCartwright[S] 0 points1 point ago

Ok - so I've got them.

  1. Fitness - Run a Marathon (Deadline: April 1st). I might not get accepted to any official ones (I will apply), but there's nothing stopping me from just getting out there and doing it myself. I've been running on/off all my life but never recaptured my high school fitness.

  2. Language - Learn French (Deadline: End Feb). It's such a cool language. I'll coincide this with a weekend trip to France.

  3. Driving License - (Deadline: End May) There are a few week long intensive courses that I'll book myself on. They're expensive but will be worth it to get this damn monkey off my back. In June I plan on taking a road trip.

  4. Make £1,000 on-line - (Dealine: End of Year).
