Why can women vote? by izbmin politics

The OP said that women shouldn't vote.

Sometimes, I think Reddit is a shithole.

If there were ever an AskReddit in which a man said he was raped, you would be the first to ridicule him.

//Laws, enforcement resources and attitudes, and systemic conditions have to be the goal posts, and not whether no rape ever occurs or no one is denied opportunity to testify in congress.//

I would recommend reading Discipline & Punish by Michel Foucault, particularly pages 221-222:

"...The general juridical form that guaranteed a system of rights that were egalitarian in principle was supported by these tiny, everyday, physical mechanisms, by all those systems of micropower that are essentially non-egalitarian and asymmetrical that we call the disciplines. And although, in a formal way, the the representative regime makes it possible, directly or indirectly, with or without relays, for the will of all to form the fundamental authority of sovereignty, the disciplines provide, at the base, a guarantee of the submission of forces and bodies."

We aren't really a post-feminist society: As with most issues in America, one step forward, three steps back.

Judicial favoritism: Most rapes go unreported, particularly in the military; also, Darrel Issa's farce of a hearing on contraception in which Sandra Fluke was denied the opportunity to testify.

Higher graduation rates: Because of the nature of our lifestyles and the culture we immerse ourselves in, boys go to jail and women go to college. Boys are pressured into gangs, and the girls are left to pursue an education.

Higher income/employment: It is true that women came out on top after the '08 crash. But they are also paid less than their male counterparts, and being a parent and a high-profile business or political figure is still unattainable. In fact, I would argue that the larger goal of Issa's hearing (and the pushback on contraception generally) is a play to remove women from the workforce.

What is your favorite quote, passage, or idea in all of philosophy? Why? by TheresJustNoWayin philosophy

[–]Plato_Karamazov 0 points1 point ago

My favorite passage in philosophy is when Heidegger starts talking about "The They" in Being & Time, how The They removes our choices from us without allowing us to even understand that we had a choice in the first place, that it covertly governs how we act and what we believe. The They is faceless society, the mob; anyone with whom we do not know.

As someone who is extremely interested in the machinations of power, this passage was breathtaking.

Why don't social conservatives realize that they're going to lose the gay marriage debate just as they lost the inter-racial marriage debate and give up? by Mr_Pricklepantsin politics

They'll keep on fighting until they die of old age. And fundamentalist Christianity will die with them, because no one else wants to be a part of something that just hurts people.

What do you find to be more impressive? A good movie or a good tv series? by paki123in AskReddit

A good TV series is more impressive than a good movie. Think of what it takes to avoid filler.

Recently acquired a new laptop for college. What should I know about maintaining and caring for it? by nerfcaltropsin AskReddit

[–]Plato_Karamazov 0 points1 point ago

The best thing to do would be to use both of those together: Blow dust off surfaces and suck it up with the vacuum. But the vents on a laptop might be too small.

With the most powerful vacuum you have. Put it against the vents and let it rip.

[–]Plato_Karamazov 1 point2 points ago

Vacuum out the fan vents once a month. That will remove dust and minimize overheating. Turn the computer off and remove the battery before you do this!!!

Also: Let your battery drain to 10-15% once or twice a week. This will preserve battery life.

Dogs are just as susceptible to ideologies (such as protecting property) as human beings, and are therefore just as capable of violence.
