BAM. by tikkio93in mylittlepony

Looks like we hit the rough waters of r/all.

How many neurons do we really have? (And why we might have 10x fewer glia than we previously thought.) Video + Article [X-post from cogsci] by knebin neuro

[–]Nissl 1 point2 points ago

It'll be interesting to see if the glial number findings hold up on replication. The neuron count is within the range of recent stereological estimates, especially considering the use of older subjects. Those same studies have often suggested glia to neuron ratios in the range of 2:1 or 3:1. Either way, it's certainly a far cry from the old dogma of 10:1.

I have never used marijuana. As a result, all I know is based on the seemingly constant praise and justification it receives on the internet. Reddit, what are your worst experiences with the drug and why is it illegal? by MagikalGiantin AskReddit

[–]Nissl 1 point2 points ago

It is illegal because several interest groups lobbied Harry Anslinger, chief of the new drug control office, to have it made illegal back in the 30's. Chief among these groups were a number of southwestern states, which wanted reasons to deport Mexican farm workers now that many Americans were unemployed. The Hearst line of newspapers was involved in whipping up public fervor to protect a number of industrial interests. There was also plenty of racism against black jazz musicians motivating public opinion.

I've had a couple bad experiences out of many uses. Once I got an unexpectedly heavy oral dose and was still having trouble finishing my sentences the next morning at work. (I was still working fine, and it wore off by noon). Another time a friend flipped out and became convinced he was dying from a heart attack. He was just getting a racing heart, followed by a panic attack. I had to take him back to his parents and confess everything. I've also had lots of "down" experiences where my issues get pulled to the surface, but I see that as a feature, not a bug. Not good for social situations though.

The biggest issue for me is that I'm subtly foggy for a few days after smoking. This matters if you have a job where you're trying to memorize lots of detailed scientific information. I also wake up exhausted for several days - I notice this much more at 30 than 20 - and I crash hard on day 3 after smoking. Serious anhedonia and depression. I've stopped using outside of the occasional concert.

I am not a religious person but don't you think that you shouldn't be subscribed to r/atheism automatically like you are not subscribed to r/christianity or r/islam or r/judaism? by dbalciin AskReddit

[–]Nissl -1 points0 points ago

Putting aside the fact that r/atheism is painful even to many of the non-religious, the lack of fully consistent criteria for default inclusion makes it seem like the site has a deliberate editorial tone. If I were running Reddit, opening a new account would pop up a page showing the top 50-100 subreddits by population or activity, with autosubs to the top ~20 SFW reddits of the day. The current discovery system is a mess.

Poll: What is wider used in Neuroscience - Matlab or R? (Need your help to design a class) by ampanmdagabain neuro

[–]Nissl 2 points3 points ago*

Postdoc here. I use Matlab and Python, never used R except to run a couple of old statistics scripts from a collaborator. Most people I know only use Matlab. Python and Matlab are remarkably similar high-level languages. If I had to differentiate based on my limited experiences: Python is free and has lots of extension libraries, some of which do things Matlab can't do (e.g. some GUI building). It can also be a chaotic, under-documented headache getting the right libraries and versions together depending on what you're trying to do. Matlab is far better for matrix calculations, (apparently) great for lots of imaging things and much better optimized if you're doing extremely heavy computational stuff with lots of loops.

Livestream from the My Little Pony Project opening night! by Nisslin mylittlepony

Sorry to be a neighsayer Trixie, that was the original announcement a couple weeks ago.

[–]Nissl 2 points3 points ago

Nah. The show would have lost a few background gags, cultural references, and bits of continuity. I don't think the target audience would have noticed much of a difference.

Faust was there through completion of the scripts for the first half of S2, and the conception of story ideas for all of S2.

Nah, she didn't have any projects lined up when she left according to an interview last summer. She just burned out.

Hasbro First Quarter Results Released; Pony Sales Continue to Grow by Nisslin mylittlepony

[–]Nissl[S] 1 point2 points ago

I've noticed Hasbro has gone out of their way to avoid talking about the adult MLP fanbase on their quarterly calls. I think they're concerned it would cause too much of a derail. The few times they have released ratings, adults have been maybe 1/4-1/3 of the MLP audience (that is actually watching on Hub).

I didn't put it in for space, but they have ~$800 million cash on hand. And they need MLP to pull in audience numbers for the LPS show. I do hope they figure out something a little better than those "webisodes" they have up on their site. Those are painful.

Season 2 is over. How are you going to pass the waiting time? by Storeslemin mylittlepony

[–]Nissl 0 points1 point ago

I'll be writing a grant, going to several music festivals, attending a couple weddings, hosting barbecues, doing lots of hiking. Maybe I'll finally start learning to make music.

As for TV I'll be watching Korra, catching up on Archer, and following Sakamichi no Apollon (if you like the whole heartwarming/sincere thing FiM has going on, definitely check this out - composer and director from Cowboy Bebop back together, and doing jazz!) I'll watch S2 again when it goes up on Netflix, and maybe I'll catch up on Game of Thrones too.

There seems to be a little confusion over Netflix pony recommendations.... by Nisslin mylittlepony

If you look at the broader Twitter feed, I'd say it's 1/3 dismissive hate, 1/3 "I don't get it" and 1/3 love/addiction/obsession. Which is pretty much how the first /co/ threads ran, to be honest.

As for the hate, some of it is a backlash against the ultra-exuberant segment of the fanbase. But of course much of it is a need to put down "girly" and "childish" things so people can show their masculinity/maturity. Not that the earlier iterations of the show incline people to give it a fair chance.

Since I'm not exactly a neutral party, these days the test I use is to mentally swap "MLP" for "Futurama." Then I ask myself whether a fan or hater is being reasonable.

Entertainment Weekly Reviews Season Finale; Wedding to be Announced in Sunday's NYT by Nisslin mylittlepony

[–]Nissl[S] 5 points6 points ago

If you're like me, you'll stop caring after several months of following the show. These days I think of the show kind of like a fantasy Futurama, and while I can still sorta remember how odd it looked to be watching a show for 6 year old girls, the hate just seems bizarre.

(At least) 13 Episodes of S3 confirmed...music by Daniel! by Ironfruitin mylittlepony

[–]Nissl 1 point2 points ago

I will just point out that this fits very well with Sellyme's claim that a Hasbro source told him that S4 writing started a month or two ago. I was wondering how they would fit a 26-episode S3 in before that.
