DAE notice that when Tony Stark mentioned shawarma in The Avengers... by wwarpdin movies

The closing post-credits scene where they were eating shawarma was only appended to North American copies of the movie. Was this a pirated copy perhaps?

If you live anywhere near Loyola then you know this van. by boardmonkeyin chicago

[–]Nick4753 1 point2 points ago

Well, they sort of do. Loyola will force their values on you, but those values surround being moral and having respect for those around you.

Those values are pretty universal and there is no assumption that the values you gain or solidify at Loyola are based on religion.

And you can of course ignore them in those courses. You're kind of wasting your money on a jesuit education though.

Networks aren't run by idiots. They realize that Friday night Live+SD (Live viewers plus those who watch before 3AMish when the Nelson boxes submit their data) numbers won't be the same as those on another night. They won't use the inevitably lower ratings on Friday as a reason to kill the show. In fact, if it performs above their expectations for that timeslot it may help the show.

Putting the show on Friday may be a sign that the network doesn't feel that the show will perform as well as other shows during key time slots through the rest of the week. If the network really wanted to cancel the show they would cancel the show, but it does show that they don't have much faith in the show anymore.

This isn't really associated with the school. Every city has stuff like this, these people just decided to live in the community surrounding the school.

It isn't pushed on you. You'll have to take at least two theology courses (not all of which are catholic/christan based), there is a small cross in every classroom that nobody my entire time there ever referenced, some of your courses may be taught by a priest, inevitably the administration will use Catholic teachings and dogma to shoot down some group's plan to do something simple and you might end up at an event or two run by a jesuit that involves a short prayer to start.

Basically you need to learn to shrug off random references to religion to go there, but nobody is going to care that you are an atheist unless you make it a big deal.

Long article in NY Times business section on student loan debt. My question: why would anyone borrow $120,000 to go to Ohio Northern University? "When I graduate, I'm going to owe $900 a month. No one told me that." by gouge-awayin TrueReddit

[–]Nick4753 1 point2 points ago

I'm under similarly hefty student loans from a private school but overall it put me in a place where I got a job that let me pay more than the minimum and live a pretty decent life.

I could have gotten my job with the credentials a local state school would have provided me but I don't think the person who would have left that local state school would have been able to land (much less keep) that job.

Although in retrospect I probably didn't understand quite what I was getting myself into.

A bit disappointed about the lack of dragons last night by CleverLannin gameofthrones

[–]Nick4753 1 point2 points ago

That "overlap" process is very time and labor consuming and requires on-set VFX supervision to ensure there is enough details to track and the correct lighting on the dragon models.

Add in rotoscoping work (which is much more "frame by frame") and you basically have a VFX team spending considerable time and money on that shot.

Upgrade or downgrade Amex account without losing account age? by ericphilbinin personalfinance

I've switched between Green and Zync (AMEX charge cards) and Blue and Blue Cash (AMEX credit cards) without a change reflected on my credit report, but the option to switch credit and charge wasn't an option when I made the change.

I ended up closing the zync card and use my blue for basically all my purchases (and use the points on Amazon.)

You did. Thanks for catching that before it went too far :)

Picture initially reminded me of the scene in WALL-E that this song was featured in. Just couldn't think of a very good way to better link it to the movie.

You know what else keeps children from accomplishing their dreams?

Death from smoke inhalation

A second entrance that is reasonably hidden from the inside but accessible and obvious from the outside would probably still keep it as a "secret room" but also offer a way for others to access the room (and leave it) in a fire.

HBO Decides It Still Isn't Difficult Enough To Watch HBO Shows by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]Nick4753 0 points1 point ago

Right, because there is more money in the dinosaur model for the time being.

Because cable providers get a 50% cut of the subscription fee they handle a significant chunk of the marketing and all the billing. They offer it as a checkbox versus an entirely separate signup process.

And cable providers are worried about cord-cutters and aren't about to let HBO rock that boat.

HBO isn't sticking their heads in the mud, they are just going where the money is right now but preparing to switch when the time is right. Which makes perfect sense.

HBO Decides It Still Isn't Difficult Enough To Watch HBO Shows by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]Nick4753 15 points16 points ago

Their revenue numbers say otherwise.

They have built enough content distribution mediums and partnerships that they could switch to another revenue stream quickly.

Flash player? Done.

HTML5 Lean-back App? Done.

iPad App? Done.

Android/iOS App? Done.

On-Demand Library? Done.

iTunes & Amazon Video On Demand? Done.

Original Programing DVD and BluRay distribution? Done.

But their bread and butter, right now, are all the partnerships they have with satellite and cable providers. They realize that they won't be able to rely on that forever, so they built an ecosystem to support the switch, but right now they see no business decision to go the Netflix model.
