I agree, but I won't edit my original submission. Instead I'll just restate it differently here. If you have dependents, please have at least 10x your annual income in life insurance. Term is cheap folks. 46 bucks a month ensures my family will be taken care of financially if something happens to me and it's well worth it.

To add to this:

If you have any dependents and you do a lot of riding, please have at least 10x your annual income in life insurance.

I wanted to do a maple stain on it, but SWMBO wanted white paint.

That thing's seen a lot of projects. It was my wife's grandfather's back when he used to build and sell birdhouses, then it belonged to my father-in-law, who taught me a lot of what I know about woodworking. Then he gave it to me when my wife and I got married.

I was going to use 1by for some of it, but I didn't think they could handle the abuse that 3 boys can throw at a piece of furniture. Those rails are actually 2x6 ripped down to 2x3, because when I did the original design I thought 2x4s looked a little too imposing :)

No offense taken, and thanks for the compliment. I'm definitely not one of the downvoters.

The point I was trying to make is that any weight that's placed on top of the slats is transferred to the 2x2 rails and then to the 2x6s. If I hadn't run that center beam, snapping the slats would be a real possibility, but it's taking the load. I put my full weight on each slat when I assembled the frames to make sure they could handle the load. This is my boys' safety we're talking about here. I'm not taking any chances :)

Those are 3/8"x4" lag screws, with a flat washer under each, countersunk 1 head depth using a 1" forstner bit.

Yeah, that's now my job, since I built the thing so tall...

I rounded the corners off, so there's no sharp edges, but it's possible I could soften them up even more.

I actually did have a wooden frame bed when I was a kid, with even thinner slats than that.

If anything, this thing is overbuilt. Every joint is glued and screwed, you just can't see the screws, since I countersunk and puttied them. Those are 3/8" by 4" lag bolts holding the bed frames to the head/foot boards, and all the lumber is 2by, with the exception of the slats, which are 1x6. There are 3 2x2 rails on each frame to carry any load that gets placed on the slats onto the 2x6s that make up the outer part of the frame. I've been on the top bunk several times and there is no flex.

Yeah, they fight all the time. But not about the bunks. Daddy said the oldest gets the top bunk and that's good enough for them.

Thanks. I may do that, since it doesn't really need to be open for the bottom bunk like it does for the middle on the right side. My oldest is up there right now, and he's doing really well with it.

They climb up the ladder on the right side of the footboard, then directly into the bunk. It's wider than it looks from the picture due to the angle. I've climbed up there for story time just about every night this week and haven't had an issue.

It breaks down into 5 pieces. Each bed frame, then the head and foot piece.

That's just the aesthetic I was going for. Also, fewer edges sticking out into the room where 3 very active boys play.

It's actually easier than it looks, that opening on the end is 2 feet wide, so even I can get into the middle bunk without any trouble.

I've got the heavy, tall, shallow furniture in the house (bookcases) anchored to the wall, but the base of this thing is very wide and stable. The l-shaped legs help a lot. I climbed up into the top bunk and shook it back and forth as hard as I could and didn't even manage to get a leg off the ground.

Hey, reddit. Could you help a friend win a "Man Cave" project? by matraelin shamelessplug

This guy's a local radio DJ. He's already resorted to false accusations of cheating once in order to get some of the leader's votes taken away. He's just ticked that he can't use the fact that he's a local "celebrity" to win the thing. Shameless indeed.
