I always kind of thought the Decemberists sounded like early of Montreal (before they went disco) with more of an emphasis on victorian england. I dunno, just my personal impression - they're an ok band, I just was never blown away. I'd rather listen to *The Gay Parade* or *Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies* anyday.

Well, that first album is a pretty amazing acheivement - you have to admit. Tom Scholz basically made the entire thing in his basement, played every instrument and mixed it himself- and it has literally no filler. Every song on that first album is a grade a fucking platinum radio hit.

well Ron Paul doesn't [seem to think so](http://www.ronpaul2012.com/2012/01/06/santorums-liberal-voting-record/). which, of course should be taken with a grain of salt. Santorum did however, vote for a bill that increased the minimum wage, one that helps erect a useless 700 mile fence on our mexican border (debatable in it's fiscal conservancy - not debatable on it's effectiveness) , a bill that would make the director of the CIA accountable to Congress (that's just common sense), and of course - for the PATRIOT act - whose unconstitutional meddling in citizen's lives is about as neo-liberal as it gets. which brings me back to my original question. Is it "conservative" to pass bills that subvert the US constitution so the government can spy on it's own citizens? I'm not making a value judgement on people who call themselves conservatives and liberals - but when they both vote to subvert the constitution against our collective well-being, invading individual's privacy without the due process granted by the founders of our nation - do the descriptions themselves mean anything anymore?

Well, if by Democrats you mean American Progressives - there was such a time. It was before the Red Scare of the 20th century coerced progressive causes (labor unions, universities, civil rights groups, the media) to cannibalize themselves in the interests of "purging them of subversive elements". That and a century of constant and neverending warmongering put an end to progressive political thought in this country. How can you have a unified vision when the "progressive" party in america preaches pacifism while engaging in endless imperial war? That cognitive dissonance tore the Democratic party apart in the 20th century, and we're left with what remains.
