Shorter, but not short. I've always been a huge proponent of concise but expressive variable names.

FYI, "data" is an almost meaningless word when it comes to variable names (it can be even worse than "x", since "x" at least has meaning in the physics and geometry domains!. All variables describe "data". Be more specific! And I apologize for critiquing your arbitrary example haha.

I always saw that line as a rule about complexity. If you have so much going on in your code that it can't fit in 80 characters, well you are probably going overboard with your identifiers or operations.

Obviously not where the rule came from, but if it helps keep down the complexity of code, I'm not against it.
