A Canadian's Saturday night drinking game by Tweeekedin canada

Let's try and take it by the context of the board then. Since one of them is "Finish drink", it makes sense that the others are different.

For the life of me, I can't figure out the popularity of Let's Plays. by thatfunnyfeelingin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago

I primarily use LPs to see the gameplay of something before a purchase. Screenshots or trailers just don't cut it, and the Let's play will give you a great range of insight into a few things:

  • What you can expect while actually playing the game
  • What kind of thinking you need to do while playing it
  • How advanced you need to get in order to have fun (usually in depth games).
  • How quickly I'd be able to learn it
  • Is it similar to something I've already got?

Aged Graphics by Tharticusin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 1 point2 points ago

I found that I had a really tough time getting into Deus Ex 1. My friends (and reddit) always tell me how great a game it is, but there's something about the graphics that just turns me off that game. The shadows are a browny green instead of "shadowy", so it may be more of a coloring issue than just being low polygon count.

As most people have mentioned, it seems like early 3d graphics ended up being a step back from the 2d games at the same time.

Your opinion for which games are actually HURTING the game industry? by basicallyin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago

Games (like Dark Souls, since it's a good example) actually have some interesting mechanisms to engage the player's thought process and abilities. You actually learn to get better at the game by trial and error, and you have to adapt or you just keep dying. There's definitely a tangible achievement once you adapt correctly.

Compared with Assassin's Creed (and some similar games) which has character progression done not in terms of the player, but in terms of the character. Your character learns new abilities instead of the player learning to play better.

What would you think of live action cut-scenes in games? by sentimentalpiratein truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 1 point2 points ago

Don't all the CnC games use live action cutscenes? Even Red Alert 3 and CnC 3 did (I didn't touch CnC 4).

The CnC 3 cast was good. Billy Dee Williams(Lando), Michael Ironside, Tricia Helfer, Grace park.

RA3s was decent. George Takei, Gina Carano etc.

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ - 1.1.2 Patch Notes by Willyammin swtor

[–]Acidictadpole 2 points3 points ago

Their entire system for this is backwards. Centurion gear (before this patch goes live) was more rare than champion gear, yet was objectively worse.

This fix probably intends to bring that back in line. Entry 50s will get centurion gear before champion gear, like they should. Compared to the previous 50s who were getting champion gear at least 5 times as often as centurion gear.

However the system is still backwards. You should be getting tokens for the level above what you're buying. Here's what I think is needed:

  • Centurion bags - No valor requirement. Contains Centurion gear and champion commendations

  • Champion bags - Valor level 30 req'd. Contains Champion gear and BM commendations

  • BM Bags - Valor level 60 req'd. Contains BM Commendations at a greatly increased rate from champion gear. And the small chance of a BM item.

This whole "Get tokens for the level below what you're buying" doesn't make any sense to me.

Games like Deus Ex or Alpha Protocol? by MrBaconin gamingsuggestions

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago

I played it at release and the only bad thing I can say is that the source engine seemed to be its limitation.

I had quite a bit of fun with it, but I had another game come out right after it which I don't recall the name of, and I ditched it for that.

Let's say the Next Xbox's used game mechanism is real, what will happen to the future of retro gaming? by movin_targetin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole -1 points0 points ago

The original topic was darknets would magically spring up and be a haven for backing up cracked games. I called bullshit on this idea.

No, you said this (in response to the term darknet being brought up).

You've got a lot more faith in your ISP providing unrestricted internet access in the future than I do.

I was merely pointing out that the ISP should have nothing to do with your ability to set up a darknet, because it is, by definition, completely private and not connected to a backbone or ISP.

A handful of nodes communicating all in private doesn't do anyone any good if there are not ingress and egress points where data can be shared with other networks

This is completely incorrect. Consider a DC++ hub on a university network. Sure, you need the network throughout the building, but that's still pretty small scale compared to what an ISP would set up. You don't need an ISP to set up your DC++ hub, just a few pieces of networking hardware and cabling. You won't get any new content, but you've got the collective power of everyone connected to buy and backup games.

No one gives a flying fuck if you and your neighbor set up a private WiFi network. If you have no outside connectivity you can't get content into or out of that network.

The point of a darknet is to not have outside connectivity. You get other data by disconnecting from the darknet, and getting access to another network, grabbing what you need and disconnecting.

You're an awfully angry person. The thing is that a darknet is not like an underground KaZaA, or torrenting network. And i know you know this. And this is the whole point you're trying to argue, and I'm not arguing that point at all.

I've had to pick up on your drivel that nobody cares about, trying to tell me something I already know but doesn't really apply to the topic (darknet). If you were interested in rebuking the concept that underground hacker paradise areas with unlimited games and everyone connected would pop up, servicing the whole world, you have no need to. I agree with this. ISPs have put a tremendous monetary investment in their infrastructure, and ordinary civilians would not be able to make up for it.

You can continue to argue the point you're trying to argue, but honestly nobody really cares anymore. I know that the internet will not be recreated without involving ISPs (and even if it was somehow, the people owning the backbones would just end up being called ISPs in the new system too). But please, feel free to continue arguing a point that nobody is listening to.. or caring about.

Also, keep it civil please. No need to tell people to shut the fuck up.

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago

Ok so you're obviously out of your depth here. How in the fuck do you think two private networks are going to communicate? You've got two options.

Why do you think two private networks need to communicate? I think you're believing that darknet is a lot larger scale than is intended. There is no mention of scale implied in the term darknet.

I know you're trying to flaunt your theoretical networking knowledge, but you're getting into an argument that you're creating for the sake of arguing.

Let's say the Next Xbox's used game mechanism is real, what will happen to the future of retro gaming? by movin_targetin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago*

By definition a darknet is private. If you don't avoid a traditional ISP then it's completely visible to them (and therefore no longer private). Darknet is not a tunneling implementation over an already established link.

A computer network with restricted access that is used chiefly for illegal peer-to-peer file sharing.

I've actually done a little research in the meantime. I've come across something called Coats' Disease. I'm not a hypochondriac or anything, but this really looks like it actually covers everything about it. I guess the next step would be to confirm diagnosis with a local opthamologist.

Let's say the Next Xbox's used game mechanism is real, what will happen to the future of retro gaming? by movin_targetin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole -1 points0 points ago

I wasn't the one who threw out that term originally. Pufflekun did. And I'm only ignoring them because they weren't part of my discussion on the point I was making.

I shouldn't have to write out the entire theory of a darknet in order to discuss the fact that the big point of it is attempting to bypass a traditional ISP.

Let's say the Next Xbox's used game mechanism is real, what will happen to the future of retro gaming? by movin_targetin truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 1 point2 points ago

I know all that, I didn't imply there wasn't a WAN in what I said. All I said was that a darknet is used without the traditional ISP (since that's the whole point, you're trying to avoid it). You instead have a series of smaller links that people privately set up. Of course you'd need a bigger "tube" to serve as the main line, but that's going into a lot more depth than I was intending to clean up.

[–]Acidictadpole 0 points1 point ago

The idea of a darknet or similar is that you don't require a traditional ISP. It's a completely seperate network that is done through multiple people connecting through eachother. Similar to a TOR but your entry node is someone elses AP.

Blindly Purchasing Sequels. And the Growth of Stagnating Franchises. by RandomHer0in truegaming

[–]Acidictadpole 32 points33 points ago*

CoD is a good example of this. The best reason I've heard for purchasing the new one is to keep up with other people playing multiplayer. That in itself is circular logic, but people seem to do it anyway.

As for assassin's creed. I would put forward that design changes in a game based largely around its narrative are not necessary each release. Bugs and issues should be taken care of between iterations, but large design changes can actually hurt the story. Halo 1-3 were pretty much the same games. Same enemies, new graphics, different skins on guns. Nobody really minded that the games were almost functionally equivalent until they finished their main story of John.

I feel the best games with sequels are ones that had a planned story from the start. I.e. Mass effect is supposed to be a trilogy, and so I'll be picking up the third because I really enjoy the story and want to play through the finale. Though if they release another one after this I think I'll consider it a lot more before diving in.

Edit: "Growth of stagnating franchises" sounds awkward >_>
