In the middle ages, people with mental disorders had holes drilled in their heads to "release the evil spirits". What do we do now that will be looked back on as barbaric in several hundred years? by TheWringerin AskReddit

I'm pretty sure it's illegal in my state in the U.S. You can get sited for endangering the welfare of a minor and then DHS because a permanent fixture in your life.

I don't know why people smoke around their kids. I'm a smoker, but I only smoke at work. I don't want my kid around it or to think it's cool. I know smoking is bad and I know I'm addicted. I don't need to pass those problems on to my kid.

Hug ALL the people!

Seriously though, I'm HUGE on hugging. I hug my friends, coworkers, everyone that I know, really.

In fact, one day, at work, one of our customers was being a douche bag. They were on site at the time, so I went back to his office and said "Someone needs a hug!" After I hugged him, I offered hugs to all the other customers in the room. It was fun, and I didn't get in trouble!

Hugs make everyone a little happier....except my brother, but he's weird.

There are a lot of places that offer free counseling or sliding scale. Some places just take donations. Think about it.

I am at a really awesome point in my life.

I am 24 years old (well...in July) and I'm a single mom. In the past year, I left an abusive husband and started standing on my own. I've been given this amazing opportunity to discover who I am and what I like.

It's really simple things that amaze me. Like, I'm wearing a Fight Club t-shirt right now. I love this fucking shirt. I never thought about what kind of clothing I liked before.

I'm going to an Andy Grammer concert next month. This is something I never thought of doing before. On the inside, I just started connecting dots and figuring out that I've got so many cool choices I can make. It's awesome!

Plus, I'm watching my son grow and learn. I love every minute of that. he's only 3 years old, but he's amazing. He's smart and every day it's something new and awesome.

So, yep, I'm very satisfied.

I have far superior hearing in my right ear as opposed to the left one that's kind of muffled sometimes. If I can't hear someone on the first go, I just ask them to face me when they speak and explain the issue.

It's definitely good to be open about it. :)

Have you ever thought of seeking counseling for this? There's got to be a reason behind what you're doing and maybe it'd be good to get some objective help.

Humor can make so many situations so much better. You do what you have to for the ones you love. I know plenty of times I've taken my mom out and just acted silly when she was feeling down. I never have cared that I'm a grown adult and walking around dancing a jig while my mom giggles. My mom gave me life, I owe her everything.

Good for you for helping your mom out! You rock. :)

I think that's understandable. Kids are very different from adults. I love my son. I think he's awesome. He's funny, smart and just all around sweet. But, I have my moments internally of "GOD DAMN IT, CAN YOU JUST STOP BEING LOUD AND STICKY FOR TWO FUCKING SECONDS!?"

It's really hard balancing being a parent, being an adult and being all the other things we are in life. Sometimes it gets tough. Kids are crazy. We all were kids and I'm sure we can all think of stuff we did that drove our parents nuts. For example, my brother and I would sing the song that never ends as loud as we could when we were young. I don't know why Dad didn't put us in a cage or something.

I think that the older they get, the more tolerable they will be. My parents and I get along famously now that I'm an adult and taking care of myself and my kid on my own. Not so much when I was younger. And, I know they probably still have moments of "WTF? Why didn't we have her put down or something?"

Parenting is an ongoing process. Good luck. :)

I'm sorry to hear that. I wish everyone could have great relationships with their moms. I always know that my mom loves me and some days that's what gets me through. I've started to tell my son "Mommy loves you. No matter what happens, always. Mommy loves you."

I hope you and your mom can find some middle ground and peace.

My mom went through a time when she was completely bed ridden, so I know that feel.

I always love helping mom up off the floor. We'll both be giggling and laughing as I'm trying to get her upright. My mom is a beacon of strength and warmth.

My brother is all kinds of bad ass when it comes to his job. He doesn't take shit off of anyone and will help anyone having a problem.

One day, apparently, some uppity woman started causing a scene over her discount (they do it a lot there...) and was yelling at everyone. Finally, my brother stepped in. He's 6'3" and kind of a big boy (not fat, but strong.)

He told her calmly "I will not stand here and yell with you. If you don't like our process, you can leave."

She calmed down and they chatted for a few minutes before she exploded again. By this time, my brother had had enough and was yelling at her while she screamed at him. She finally yelled "I'm going to call and report you to your bosses!!!"

My brother, in all his bad ass glory, held his name badge close to her face and said "Do it. Now you've got my name. Do it."

Nothing ever came of it from the big bosses and the woman hasn't been back since.

What's a seemingly easy to follow rule of society that no one appears to follow that drives you nuts? by Sterculiusin AskReddit

[–]112233445566778899 0 points1 point ago

YES! I've had this happen a few times. It just makes me want to walk out and be like "Yeah, fuck you too." I've even had the urge for coffee strike me while running late to meet someone. Did I stop for coffee? Fuck no. I was already being rude being a couple minutes late!

However, if they bring coffee for me too then it turns into an endearing gesture of "I'm sorry I'm late. I thought it'd be nice if we both had a good cup of coffee."

Daughters of Reddit! I'm a new Dad. What's your single best piece of "fathering" advice? by prosskin AskReddit

[–]112233445566778899 2 points3 points ago

Be present. Be there for your daughter. She needs guidance and direction throughout life. Do not EVER stop listening and stop caring.

Teach her the boy things too. She needs to know how to fix her own car. She needs to know how to unclog her toilet. Do not let her get away with being a wuss. "But I'm a girl!!!" should never be an excuse for anything.

Read to her. Mom gets bonding time by breastfeeding (if that's what she's doing) and things like that. Stake out your own time with your little girl. Read to her, sing to her, be the one to bathe her. Whatever you opt to do, make sure that you stake out one on one time.

When she gets older, make sure she knows always that you love her. She's going to fuck up and she's going to be dramatic. Even though you may need to take a time out from a diva moment, always make sure to let her know you love her, but you don't like her actions at the moment.

Congrats on your kiddo, man. You'll do great. Half the battle is wanting to be a good parent and being excited about it.

My mom has MS. For some reason, she feels badly when she falls down in public or loses some bodily function while out and about. I mean, I get it, it's embarrassing. But, she'll apologize to me while we're out and about.

In order to make mom not feel bad, I tell her jokes and laugh at what happened. I make up funny stories about someone walking into the restroom and seeing her fallen on the floor and we giggle together about it. I learned early on that if I could make her laugh about a situation, she'd stop feeling embarrassed and stop apologizing. We'd fix whatever the situation was and move on with our day having just as much fun as we started out having.

SOooooooo many people have looked at me like "Why the fuck are you laughing at your mother? She's on the fucking floor!" Welp, when mom falls, she needs a moment to recalibrate before anyone can help her up (you know, take stock, make sure nothing's really injured and such) so, might as well share a good laugh at gravity's expense! :)
